Savage / Springfield 67B lock up question

I got this shotgun from a buddy who bought it from a buddy who Jamed it up and couldn’t un jam it. I’ve gone over it and replaced parts that obviously needed it but no it doesn’t unlock after dropping the hammer. Everything seems to be in the proper place just doesn’t unlock until I hit the slide release. Any ideas on what I’ve got backwards?

Or maybe that’s how this model functions?
