After reading through all the threads concerning what gun would you carry if the SHTF, I decided to build one for just that purpose. My goal was to build a light yet robust AR platform carbine with useful features and optics that fit the capabilities of the platform. I believe I hit my marks. Of course there are pros and cons to every thing and this is not perfect, but for the time being this is my pick for a SHTF scenario.

My setup is only one to two ounces heavier than my stock Colt 6920 M4 with carry handle and flashlight. It's pretty impressive, lugging around a heavy gun is the last thing I'd want in a SHTF scenario. You'd already be humping a lot of weight with all the water, ammo and other necessities you'd need, weight was a big consideration for me.

    Parts list:

Aero Precision: M4E1 upper/lower and melonite coated gas tube.
    Bravo Company: Gas block.
FN: CHF chrome lined barrel optimum profile with estimated 20k+ rounds life span.
Fulton Armory: M16 BCG, buffer and spring.
    ALG Advanced tactical combat trigger.
Wilson Combat: Bullet Proof slide release, charging handle and Accu-Tac three pronged flash hider.
Magpul: CRT stock, MOE grip, MBUS Pro metal backup sights and sling swivels.
Strike Industries: Stock extension, forward assist and polymer dust cover.
Fortis: End plate with castle nut
SLR Rifle Works: Billet aluminum handguard, barrel nut, 3 place rails, hand stop, and hollow steel pivot pins.
    Slate Industries rail covers.
Streamlight TLR-2 1000 lumen weapon light with pressure switch and lens filter.
    Arms Unlimited ambi mag release.
    Forward Controls textured mag button.
Eotech: EXPS 2-2 and G-43 magnifier.
    Vickers Blue Force combat sling.
Cerakote: Graphite black and Stone Gray. I Cerakoted every external part with the exception of the backup sights, dust cover and takedown pins. I did this for corrosion protection and to eliminate shine. Since I just completed building it there is a temporary shine from all the grease and oil oozing out, once I shoot it more it should burn off and have a nice flat finish.

What gun would I carry in a SHTF scenario? Here it is. :loaded: Click the photos for a larger picture.

The light has both a pressure and rocker switch. I tucked all the wiring under the pressure switch to avoid snagging or being burned by the barrel.

Completed budget ar-10. 25 yd groupings bench in center and freestand top left.

Aero upper & lower, Wilson combat BCG/20” Barrel, Larue mbt, Seekins adjustible gas block, EC tuner brake, atlas bipod & vfg, magpul moe stock. Recoil is really light and not too heavy for a 20”.

Building this was really fun and it’s helpful I bought almost everything from primary arms, didn’t even have to pay for shipping since I’m 30 minutes away!

I was thinking about putting my suppressor on the 14.5 SOCOM upper to sight in the ACOG. When I went to pull the suppressor the string keeping the cover attached to the gun just seemed like to much of a challenge. Seeing as I ain’t got a kid perhaps I need protege? When I take it out for a range trip I don’t see any reason to take it off a pistol lower

Might be a nice running boar rifle.

Remington 700 in .30-06, 26" E.L. Shaw heavy barrel, Bell & Carlson Tactical stock, Bushnell 4200 Elite 3-12x44mm scope /w illuminated mildot reticle, Ceracote. The Versa-Pod bipod also has interchangeable round and 'raptor claw' feet. It still has the factory trigger and I never sent it back to Remington after the recall. I'll eventually get a new, better trigger module.

I've been using HSM 208 grain A-Max ammo. The bullets have a wicked .648 ballistic coefficient. Supposedly they go subsonic out beyond 1100 yards. Thus I'm getting near .300 WinMag performance without the added recoil and muzzle blast.

Slapped this together for my Dad today. He’s excited to get it sighted in.

Aero Precision upper, barrel and rail were purchased together. Tossed in a BCM bcg and Radian charging handle. Had Bexar Arms here in SA do the pin and weld on the 14.5” with a Precision Armament AFAB. Stripped Aero lower with CMMG parts kit, Radian selector, Rise Armament trigger, Spikes H2 buffer, and JP buffer spring. Streamlight Pro Tac on a Cloud Defensive mount with the tape switch in a Cloud Defensive LCS. Eotech XPS2 with Magpul Pros as backups. Magpul stock, grip and handstop for furniture.
