I'd have to agree with Axxe. The quality of Remington and every company they touch is shit now. If you insist on the 870, buy an older used one.

Mossberg is pretty much good to go, new or old.

Walk into your local gun shop/pawn shop and browse their used guns. More than likely, they'll have a few old Mossbergs and Remingtons kicking around for cheap.

Problem here is everyone now knows this and the older guns bring premium $.

I have several 870's of various models and ages, from 40 to 5 years, some well worn & some unfired. Haven't noticed any quality differences. I find the 870 to be extremely reliable and durable.

When heading for Latin America for dove hunts, I'm often asked "Where is your spare back-up shotgun?" I just smile and say "Mine is an 870, I don't need a spare shotgun!"

I was an Auto5 and Mod.12Guy before, no regrets with the Remington's.

Got 2 Mavericks, no problem. 870 jams on bent rims, just pull barrel to clear. Maverick takes mossy 500 barrels, safety on trigger guard.

As much as I like the 870's I have never seen one that was so smooth you could hold it vertical, pull the slide release, and it would fall open. The older Model 12's would.

    Moonpie,

IF you have a GT Distributors store nearby, check them out. - GT prices 870, Mossberg & (occasionally) Ithaca shotguns CHEAP.
(I got my 870 from the Austin store FOR CHEAP & it needed only cleaning, relubrication & the stock refinished to be "right". It is mechanically flawless & will outlast me.)
BTW, I'm "on the waiting list" for an Ithaca Model 37 Riot-gun there.

    yours, satx

I prefer a mossberg because of safety location.

I wouldnt turn down an 870 though.

FWIW, Don’t be cheap. Buy quality. Buy once - Cry once.

    Yep - I resemble that:

Nice looking shotgun,Ray. I've got a 870 TB with nice figured stocks also.

If I was going to buy a new SD/HD shotgun,I'd be buying a Benelli. Yes,They cost more than an 870 or 500,but they are twice the gun right out of the box.
