    there are some rimfires that have the firing pin designed to have a positive stop milled into it... it physically cannot ding the edge of the chamber. I think (but definitely could be wrong) that is the case with the Rugers. I know there are others, but I would either verify for certain that is the case, or I'd put something in the chamber to protect it. That's a pretty simple thing to do...

    Gunz are icky.
    Gun tinkerers should keep one of those .22 chamber iron tools around.
    I’ve returned several old guns to service using that tool.
    Keep a supply of those red plastic snap caps too. I keep them in all my rimfire guns.
    You can also repurpose fired casings for the same reason.
