My second car in high school was a ‘62 Impala SS convertible. I’m a big blue oval guy now, but I would gladly accept that car back into the family.

Nice 55, first year customers could get a factory Chevy auto w V8.

The year before, a few ‘’Dealer Only’’ factory custom ‘54 sedans had V8’s.

The big deal until that was the ‘’Power Pack straight 6.’’

For ‘56 & later, the little V8 was very popular.

Anyone recall when the 327’s came out ?

I think the 327's came out in 1962 or 63. Regarding the "Power Pack", as I recall it was an option on the 283; different heads and a 4bbl carb.

In 1966 I had a 1962 Chevy impala SS rag top that was a 327 4 in the floor.

When I rebuilt my '55 in '73, all I had money for was the engine. No spare; drove it till a tire blew, and bought one more.
Don't want to put such a nice car, as in the OP, in the hands of a teenager.

    Gee, i thought it asked about that Cherry I wanted in high school. . . . . . .

Whose mind was on mechanical items back then ?

We wanted the car, mainly b/c we thought it would help us get the Girl.

    Dallas Texas or so
My first new car was a 66 Corvair Monza with the quad carb 140 hp engine, air conditioning and a 2 speed power glide. I would still be driving it if some illegal Mexican hadn't totaled it while it was parked. That was in 84. Car had 200k miles. PRted it out for more than twice what I paid for it
