Casual day of shooting and bullshitting at the RDI facilities. No pressure, just hanging out and blasting. $30, this Saturday at 4 PM. I'll be there, so all of you who have wanted to strangle me will finally have your chance.

    Quick review:

For a mere $30 we were given four different exercises with unlimited runs. The atmosphere was casual and perfect for beginners who may be nervous about getting into more intense, dynamic, and physical gun training than a stationary range allows. (I know I'm sure as Hell bored of the usual popping paper at a max speed of one round per second which most ranges mandate, but I'm also not ready to jump right in to IDPA or USPSA.)

Of the four stages presented, three were run-and-gun and the fourth was competition shooting with two players.

Stage 1 was a simple "Bounding" exercise in which two shooters engage a target from 50 yards with rifles and start closing the gap, one car at a time. Communication and awareness of your partner's position is vital. Once the final car is reached, shooters then engage two targets on the ground while kneeling or prone. Shooters then run over to a different car and engage a target at 50 yds. This is theoretically the easiest exercise, but got interesting at night when my partner needed me to shine my rifle light so he could see the last target, then started having malfunctions. I'm proud to say I did a heroic job of keeping the steel shillouette enemy from attacking him while he was doing his remediation. Another life saved.

The second stage was a one-person pistol course. The shooter picks a card from a deck and memorizes the face, then sits in the back and awaits the signal to begin firing from inside the vehicle at four targets 30 yds away. Shooter then gets out and runs 10 yds to barrels on the right and shoots the same four targets while kneeling. Shooter then runs 20 yds left and engages the same targets, shooting 1 and 2 while tanding and 3 and 4 while prone. Student then runs around the suburban about 40 yards to a barrel placed 5 yds in front of four different playing cards. Shooter must shoot the card with the face value he picked at the beginning. Think you can remember after all that?

Stage 3 would be a bore to describe, but was a very fun IDPA style pistol and rifle exercise for one shooter, complete with V-Tac barrier. I'd never used one before but enjoyed the challenge it presented. Those Vikings sure know how to chop a board.

Stage 4 was two AR-500 "Texas Star" targets and two small shillouette targets. Two shooters start at barrels 40 yards back from the targets. On the signal, they run 20 yds to barrels 20 yds from the targets, unholster, and finish the race by cleaning the targets. I can't run very well due to a recent pelvic fracture (it was snapped in half like a wish bone nine months ago), but I'm happy to report I ended up with 4 wins and 0 losses on this one despite having every single opponent have a few seconds head start on me. (Except for the guy with one leg. We were pretty evenly matched.)

The courses started at 4 and wrapped up at 7:15. Afterwards many of us drove back to the club house for a drinking and bullshitting session. The man who put it all together, Jesse Noriega, was kind enough to buy about 20 pizzas for everybody, and good times were had by all. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.

Good review. Seems like it would have be challenging and fun. Good way to learn your weaknesses.

The cool thing is weren't playing for points. Everyone goes at their own pace. We even had a guy with only one leg run the drills! There's no excuse for anyone not to go if they want to!
