Columbus was a POS. What’s the issue here?
Many people of today often judge those of the past through a modern day lens. None of the explorers of the past were saints. Conquests of the past led to those who became victims of such conquests. Columbus made accomplishments that helped shape the Americas as they are today. We can recognize those accomplishments and still know that how it came about would not be acceptable by today's standards.

And those who push the "Indigenous People's Day" won't acknowledge that those people aren't "Indigenous" either - their ancestors came across the land bridge that would connect modern day Alaska with Russia. And that those same people were raping, pillaging, and conquering one another before the white Europeans showed up and showed them how to really "conquer and oppress" with their Bang Sticks and horses and metal blades.

Yes, the natives had cities, and they had nations. None survived long after the Europeans showed up. History is written by the victors, and every white-guilt liberal who boo-hoos because the poor natives are "oppressed" and those people's ancestors suffered atrocities at the hands of the evil white man could all collectively piss-off back to whatever European backwater their ancestors came from and lead by example, but they won't.

Its likewise telling that you don't find major advancements and cultural revolutions outside of Europe or Asia until settlers from each started colonizing. If Europeans hadn't colonized the Americas or Africa - would the natives on those continents have advanced in the way they have today, or would they still be living in mud shacks or teepees, warring with one another, stealing women and slaughtering the men and boys of fighting age? Would they still be living like the Amazonian tribes? Would that be better than modern life?

Yeah, the white man committed some pretty heinous attrocities in the name of "progress" - and there were many mistakes made. Semi-sovereign "reservations" for the Indians was a shit thing to do, and it is a mess of a system today. The white man always had the upper hand and could've NOT created the reservations or made treaties with the "Indians" - we all may have actually been better off if they hadn't because the natives wouldn't be any worse off, and many would likely be better off having integrated into society the same way that the black and hispanic peoples did.

The special rights granted to them likewise wouldn't have been put in place, leading to situations where there is friction with the non-"indigenous" population. In the Pacific Northwest that often manifests itself when the "natives" (many of whom at this point have more European blood than native, but whatever, they're card carrying tribe members) gill net salmon when the "sport" fisheries are closed down, or seriously restricted due to low return rates. The natives will then turn around and sell those fish on the side of the road to the white man at a premium price.

Its also illegal to carry a firearm onto a reservation unless you have permission from the tribe's chief, which many aren't keen on giving out.

I've got more native blood in me than a lot of the card carrying folk - from tribes in Oklahoma to Oregon and Washington. You won't get any support from me for this "Indigenous People's Day" nonsense. Columbus never even set foot on mainland North America - he landed in the Caribbean. Leif Erikson and other Vikings actually had settlements on the continent before Columbus ever made his voyage. We should celebrate Leif Erikson day, but that'd piss off the lefties too, since Vikings were known to be oh-so-tender to anyone who opposed them or who occupied territory they wanted.

Its part of the Hate America movement - the leftists absolutely hate this country, its foundation, its history and anything that made it what it is today, but they sure love the fruits of all that labor and oppression that went into making it. If you look at any group's history, there's a lot of evil shit you could point out - doesn't matter if they're black, brown, yellow, purple, or white.

They have to twist everything into something bad. They have to strip away the holidays that celebrate any white man. We used to celebrate George Washington and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays - they had to consolidate those into "President's Day" because MLK Jr's birthday fell in the middle and they made that a holiday. Now we have Black History Month (they kinda shorted them didn't they, by giving them the shortest month? More oppression from Whitey)

Here's an honest question - aside from the Code Talkers of WW2 - what were the major advancements or contributions to society as we know it by the "Indigenous people" that should prompt us to celebrate that holiday, as opposed to Columbus Day? They got slaughtered a lot by US Army soldiers, we fought a number of wars / skirmishes with them, they murdered white settlers in the west with frequency, they were shoved onto reservations... I don't think I learned anything in school about them making great leaps in science, mathematics, aerospace, industry, or engineering. We learned that they taught European settlers about corn and gave them some gardening tips. Does that warrant their own holiday? I guess maybe it should be a somber one like Memorial Day or Pearl Harbor Day.

The whole mess is stupid and well enough should be left alone. It'll always be Columbus Day to me and Bo Jiden can go fornicate himself with a rusty spoon.

    In good socialist/communist fashion,
I say we rename all federal holidays in order of occurrence. Columbus Day would be Public Holiday 8 now that Juneteenth has been added to the calendar.

States/localities don’t get to make their own up, either.

While I won't refute that Columbus hadn't set foot on North America, or that the Vikings had set foot on North America. It was Columbus proving that the world was round that opened up exploration of North & South America, which led to colonizing. The Vikings came and either died out or left without spreading word for further exploration. Therefore, the Vikings didn't really help shape what is today the Americas.
