What did you have to do without in the 2021 Valentine's Winter Storm?

We lost electricity/heat for 36 hours, then it was rolling blackouts for another 36 hours. Thanks be to God we didn't lose water as I would find that circumstance much more difficult with which to deal. But we did have a backup water supply, just in case. Had plenty of food and a camp stove on which to cook. We're half-decent preppers.

BTW, I'm calling this the 2021 Valentine's Winter Storm. Notice how the media has made no reference to Valentine's Day? Might have to do with hurting commercialism?

I feel as though I was maybe inconvenienced. But to say I did without would be an over statement.

I did witness (save for one) neighbors coming together and working with each other. I live in a retirement community brimming with elderly folks. Plenty of opportunity to extend a helping hand.

I voted "Nothing", but I did go without a flush toilet and tap water showers for a couple days. I could have hand filled the tank, but a potty chair was less trouble, and my showers came from a camp shower and water heated on my wood stove.

We lost power for 4.5 days, and lost water the last 1.5 days.
we were blessed to have an RV inside our garage. So after the first night without power we moved into the RV. We would run the generator for electricity for lights coffee and TV
and would use the propane heater in the RV to stay warm. I had to go outside every three hours to check the faucets to prevent them from freezing solid and to prevent the pool equipment that’s above ground from freezing solid in addition to breaking the ice up in the pool so it would not freeze solid and expand.

all of this paid off in the end with no damage to any plumbing at our house. Without having the RV it would’ve been a much more miserable 4 1/2 days.

I got to definitely identified some shortcomings in our preparations that I will be addressing for the next time anything like this happens.
uprades will include an inverter, Metal exhaust system for the RV generator, handheld carbon monoxide detector to supplement the one in the RV, and power adapter cord so the RV generator can backfeed the house safely. I also have an auxiliary 90 gallon diesel tank in storage that I will set up for use at the house.

Prior to storing the RV from now on will make sure the propane tank and fuel tank are completely full in addition to the onboard water tank.

We lost electricity for 64 hours total. Neighbor came over and helped me get the generator started, I was able to find gas and we just plugged the furnace into extension cord so we had heat (natural gas). Water finally was off for about 1 1/2 days but we had plenty of drinking water and a well tank with 80 gallons in it we used to flush. Plenty of food, beer, and wine kept us well fed and lubed. It was not fun at 70 years old going outside every 2 to 3 hours to refill the generator, or pumping gas into gas cans in 18 degree windy weather, but we survived. Now we're either going to get a General or Kohler and have it running on natural gas so we don't have to go through that again.

We were very lucky, only lost power twice, but we got it back at 9 and 10 pm, so we didn't suffer like others during the cold nights. Never lost water, only low water pressure. Of course, I was ready with a Honda 5K watt generator and a couple of propane heaters. As for food and water, once we stocked up during covid (mainly our usual hurricane supplies), we're fairly prepared for a good two or three weeks of needed supplies.

Our power was out for 2 hours shy of 5 days.
On the second day, I got out the generator (4kw) and hooked most things except the HVAC and water heater.

Lost power for 12 hours, phone for 2 days and internet for 6 days. Nothing of real consequence. However no mail service from Monday thru Saturday. What happened to the postal creed?

    To All,

I had water, gas & electricity throughout the FRIGID WEATHER but my Valentine's Day was lonely as H as my lady was NOT in TEXAS & could NOT fly into SAT.
(During the EMERGENCY days, I had a stream of GIs/wives who came to my place to cook/eat, shower & shave. = Seems that I was one of the few people in our local area that had EVERYTHING throughout the ICE PLAGUE.)

The other thing that I didn’t think about ahead of time was; if you lose power and you were on septic, then you can only use so much water anyway because you will overflow or back up your septic system. Fortunately did not find this out the hard way. In Tennessee, we had a gravity septic system, so I was not as familiar with the effluent pumps down here

Good point. If the septic system is one that relies on electrical power to function that is very true. Mine is a very simple old-fashioned gravity working system. Of course losing our water for four days, and using stored water for flushing, it wasn't being used but minimally.

Power was intermittent (2 to 3 hours on, 1 to 3 hours off). Not a real.issue as I have a dual fuel range, so I just put the burners with a lighter. Coleman catylic heater to keep the room warm when power was out. Water for Washington g and flushing was resolved by melting snow and collecting off the roof when it started to melt. Showered using heated snow water on stove and a 2 gallon tractor supply pump up weed sprayer. Collected 30 gallons of water off of the roof a day just in front of my entry in buckets. Good times!

    AZ Refugee,

Sounds like you made it work, despite the "SKETCHY" situation. = CONGRADS.

Lots! However I believe that not having heat was the biggest! Let me tell you freezing your ass is no picnic. If the power companies don’t make this right by the people then I hope they get sued and lose everything they have worked for.

    contender buff,

At 0220 on Wednesday AM, it was 27 degrees INSIDE my housekeepers home. - I tried to get her to use my spare double-bed but she said that her BF wouldn't understand & had 2 mummy sleeping bags. = She said the next afternoon that she did OK with the 2 bags overnight.
(I loaned her two heavy coats that WED.)
