Why do you say it’s not ideal?
"Skills valuable to this country" is a much broader category than it was back then. The stairways at Ellis Island were monitored to determine the health of immigrants. If they were too weak to easily climb them, they got sent back. Things are different now. Someone could have their mobility impaired for any number of mostly benign reasons but, for example, be a brilliant computer programmer. The criteria that were in place back then would keep that person out.

Remember, the situation posited was that we re-open Ellis with the same criteria for admission as when it was operating at full capacity. That's not ideal because using the same criteria would keep out valuable immigrants.

Still, as I said, it would be better than the way we currently do it.

The visa program needs to be reworked and better supervised. Too many U.S. workers are laid off - often after being forced to train their replacements - who are either visa workers or overseas. Siemens and Disney, just to name a few, have done this.

Besides being cheaper, the foreign workers are less likely to argue with their supervisors, which all too many businesses want but which is not necessarily good for business.
