That was a very good find. These third gen Smiths are getting popular, and your example looks very nice

    Grumps21,

INDEED they are. = I liked mine very much when I was issued a S&W 639 LONG AGO.
In point of fact, I do NOT like any of the so-called modern/improved S&W semi-autos
FYI, I'm looking for two 2nd/3rd generation Smiths right NOW: One for my sister of the heart & one for me.
("Sissy" needs a single-stack, due to her smaller than average hands.)

I took a chance on a 4506 I found at a pawn shop right around the First of the year. GB was selling them upwards of $700 but I got it for $500. Still too much in my mind but it was the absolute best price I could find anywhere. Grips were scarred up pretty badly, so I did get new OEM Smith Wesson grips from Midway. They were around $20 or $25 if I recall. On the up side, I didn’t have to pay shipping or an FFL which adds roughly $50 to the bill. Also I can pay cash which avoids the 3% that some sellers tack on for credit cards

    Grumps21,

As little as 2 years ago all of the 3rd gen Smiths (in great shape) were about 300-350 bucks. = GT in Austin had 5-6 police surplus ones for 289.99.
(I wish that I had bought them all.)

The Smith that should have kept forever was the VERY EARLY Model 59 that I bought from a DPD officer in 1976 "for peanuts", as he didn't like it at all.

I traded the pistol for a CORVAIR SPYDER convertible about 6 months later & wrecked the Corvair. = !@#$%^!

One place had a "gen-u-whine" CIA marked SKS used in Vietnam. I asked the guy how he knew that, he pointed to the Century Arms (CAI) import stamp on the barrel. My eyes were rolling so fast they were probably doing sonic booms.

Most of the places near me usually just have sporting guns or cheap pistols. The odd milsurp is either beat to shit or absurdly priced. Often both

Well since 3rd gens came up these I picked up while not PS finds one was online (4006 Tulsa PD trade) and the other (4516-1) I ran across in a little local GS.
Pd 300 for the 40 and 450 for the 4516 which was Id guess previously fired less than 100 rds as it was basically NIB just no box but with a spare mag and manual.

    Texas45,

Should you decide to dispose of the .40, I'll take 1st refusal.

I traded a Sigma guitar (almost new) and $32 for a barely used Marlin 336 with a rubberized scope on it. I felt like a bandit. Around 1990.

In 1970 I bought my first shotgun at a pawn shop. A Remington Model 31TC Trap for $100. The next paycheck I went back and snatched up an Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight Deerslayer for $75. Then I found a nickle plated Beretta .32acp.

Years later I picked up my first Glock, a G19, at a pawn shop in Walla Walla for $400.

Man, pawn shops around here today just don't have the good stuff, and when they do, the price is astronomical.

Nothing in a pawn shop....but I just found a Norinco Type 56S, unfired at Nardis Gun Shop/Range. It is a Midland, TX import from NASI. Super rare. I paid a mint for it, but it is a super hard gun to find

Just snagged a nice 4” smith & wesson model 66-1 for $450 at the local pawn. They had just got it in so they wouldn’t come off the price any, but based on what I’m seeing them sell for on Gunbroker, I think it was either mismarked or they got it confused with a Taurus 66. They also has a second identical 66-1 there and I almost snapped it up too, but it was $525 and it wasn’t quite as nice as this one but probably still a decent deal at that price. I don’t think the one I bought was fired much. There’s just a very light cylinder ring, and it locks up tight with nice bore. The only glaring defect if you want to call it that is the PO painted over the orange the front sight in white. It flakes off when I use my fingernail, so I think I can get it off fairly easily. I actually stumbled on this when looking for extra magazines. I wasn’t planning another gun purchase until I got rid of some that I already have and this find was purely by accident.

Pretty accurate, I haven't found any crazy deals at a pawn shop for years...Prices are definitely crazy for anything desirable. Before the internet it was likely much easier to find good deals. Now they can look up some old sold auction price or high reserve and set prices based on that

Most all pawn shops in Texas deal in guns. Not much of a chance to find a bargain though a nice specimen is always lurking.
I got an 870 at a pawn shop years ago. It was beat up but functioned well. Usually anything I'm interested in is overpriced to the point I don't bother to attempt to buy it.
