Just bought a 18KW whole house generator. Canned beans are fine but I buy bags of dried beans, corn, Lentils, corn meal and rice because their shelf life is extreme. Kept sealed in Mason Jars. Pasta and powdered soup stock.

I've thought about a generator for years, ever since Ike. I just haven't plunked down the cash for one.

I have recently gotten a quote for solar + batteries as a stand-alone alternative to a gas-powered gen. It's expensive. 16kW of panels + the supporting stuff is about $50k. $20k per battery. Ouch. Hard to get over that hurdle when electricity is cheap.

US Power Pros in Magnolia just gave me a quote for a Briggs and Stratton 20kW generator. $10087 installed. Generac 22kW was $500 more and about 2x the lead time (Generac is at 10 months!).

This quote is about $2k less than the other quotes I received. Figures I’d pass on the details.
