My 12 year old son says yesterday "when can we go shoot?"

The answer is soon, but he's got to be home to go and not running off with his friends when we have time to take him!

My some met me at the door when I came from the range Saturday and was asking how old he has to be before he can go.

He's a typical 6 year old so...told him when he can be calm and pay attention to what's going on around him.

I'm not sure who's gonna have more trouble waiting for him to reach that level, me or him.

I started taking my son at 7
At first you have to be super patient with them and expect to not stay long
Once the attention span maxs out you need to be prepared to leave early
If you stay past that and then have to start dealing with them and getting onto them it makes it a bad experience for them

My daughter started at 4 (at the house) and did very well.

My son has shot a couple times at the house but only on days when he was abnormally chilled out.

When he's ready he'll be there, but the attention span is the big limiter to taking him any distance to go to a range. At the house it's about 10 minutes before he's more interested in playing on the berm, lol.

Well... I told my seventeen year old whom I barely see (college plus SOCIAL TIME plus busboy job) that I wanted to go shoot at the range with him tomorrow. Let's see if I can pry him away from social activities to spend a little range time with good old mom. He said that he would.

Nice group. Looks like it wasn't too crowded. The way people were buying thursday and friday I was afraid it would be packed.

We got there at 10 and it looked like it could rain. Not busy at all.

When the sky cleared it got busier but not horrible.

It was a good day. My kids left as I knew they would get bored when I shot some bigger rifles. I ended up next to a family with a 6ish year old girl at the 25 yard line.

I waited for her to finish as I had a few big rifles with brakes that needed to be sighted in.

I didn't bother shooting further than 25 yards as I wasn't feeling it but it was a good day anyways seeing the kiddos out.

Well now my other guys came home from camping early ... and so I guess we are all supposed to go. Family range day. Let's see if we can all get along.

ETA: Do I get bonus points for bringing along the 16 year old lifelong childhood friend of my boys who has never went shooting before?

I take it they had fun even without shooting each other?

yep, they were all still alive when we left the range. Husband and I left out from the range and went to a new brew pub in town (having a blast currently!) and said "see you jokers later." My seventeen year old drove all of them home and they were supposed to go swimming in the neighbor boy's pool. Life is good today.
