I have come into the possession of several pounds of coins.
What is the best way to change it into bills?

Most banks want them rolled, not going to do that.
I have read that some banks exchange for free, if one has an account.

    I believe coinstar charges ~12%.

Just wondering if anybody has actual experience.

FWIW The bank I use (local) charges 3%. Last month they had a special, no charge for customers and we cashed in $470 worth. All the banks I've dealt with won't take rolled coins.

Try a local bank instead of rip off mart.

I have lots of experience. Both my banks are jerks on the subject, the best one charging 7% to use their broken-most-of-the-time machine. I've seen Coinstar charge as much as 14%.

    I suggest -
    1. Find a Coinstar machine that will pay off in Amazon credit. That usually comes with a 0% surcharge. I buy enough from Amazon that this is my preferred, easiest method. The $800 headphones I'm wearing right now came via Amazon and were paid for by coins dumped into the Coinstar machine closest to my home, in a Kroger.
    2. If you want cash, find a Coinstar machine that uses a cell connection to call home. (I think they all do, but I can't be sure.) Turn on your cell blocker. Dump in your coins asking for an Amazon credit. When the machine can't call home to get an Amazon code, it will print a "Sorry we couldn't get what you asked for" receipt that you can take to customer service to get cash at a 0% surcharge. Turn off your cell blocker as soon as you get your receipt. Don't try this unless the vendor you choose for credit is one you'll be happy with; if the cell blocking doesn't work, you're going to wind up with a full-value discount code so it needs to be somewhere you'd actually spend money.
Be sure to check the Coinstar web site to find out what machines are offering what sorts of credits. Some offer nothing so the above won't work. Amazon credits aren't available on all machines but you might find some other store you like; ya never know. Go slow at the machine and read all the screens; sometimes there are gotchas lurking. Remember that the selection of the place where you'll get credit happens before you start dumping in coins. If you don't get to make that choice, the machine may have reverted back to a software default where it issues no credits. This can be true no matter what the Coinstar web site or the stickers on the machine itself say.

Did a coinstar a couple years ago. Was mad when they took $20 of what I had.

This is some agonizing crap. Placed the order on 7/1 knowing the bullets were back ordered 4-6 weeks. Shipped right at 4 weeks. Now it's in the USPS limbo.

    Sign of the times ...

Took 2 months to get a SunCast shed (made in Illinois ... go figure??)
2nd one's been on order for 5 weeks now and still no ETA

Freezer took two+ months, from Lowes.

Refrigerator took 3 1/2 weeks, from Home Depot.

Constant Amazon "delays" in deliveries, especially when they put USPS in the loop.

I've been MIA from here for a while...but I'm back to cause a ruckus! I hope all of you have been well. It was hot AF while I performed factory acceptance testing on two pipeline measurement skids today; a gas skid with dual ultrasonic meters headed down to Sweeny and a single run coriolis meter crude oil ACT skid headed up to New Mexico. I'll see them both again for commissioning in about a month.
