So, I have reserved a spot to hunt Nilgai,

Unfortunately, I am told that I need and artillery piece to shoot one without pissing it off.

The .300WM was stated as the minimum they required for this hunt, what other calibers are on par with the .300WM?

I have a 338 win mag for elk. It's a browning BAR semiauto so it doesn't kick at all. Just moves you.

Watched Meat Eater episode the other night when Steve hunted those. I couldn't wrap my head around their look. They look like 4 animals in one.

300PRC is gonna hit very hard with factory setup.
    Absolutely right.

The head doesn't match the body. The neck has to do some weird taper to attach it to the massive body.

7 Remington mag is to fast for the brush & might deflect.

I’m just curious what Nilgai and similar were killed with before the modern Ultra Mags.

Every cartridge is a trade off and African brush ain’t South Texas brush. Certainly there’s a spectrum of cartridges suitable.

Before the ultra mags I would say 30/06 & .375 HH along with the heavier Mauser calibers Nilgia are from India. The African Eland is similar. RSA is very similar to South Texas in some regions in terrain & weather.

Maybe .505 gibs or 500 nitro express?

Dunno. We had a black powder elephant double in the house growing up. That got traded for a 375HH, and somewhere in the mix was a Nitro Express.

These were all guns that I’m told my dad used against large game in Asia in the 50s. Don’t know how accurate that is as all of the rifles were sold off in the early 80s.
