If the aem will allow you to individually retard cylinders based on knock with a distributor, then keeping the distributor isn't much of a downside. Assuming the rotor can handle the high current, etc. I know some companies will make low resistance buttons for the rotors, specifically for CDI.
I never did a plug chop like that on the street. When I started working on bikes, the dynos had air fuel sensors. Glad I missed out on that.
