Well he went ahead without me, purchased an Anderson at one of the LGS. Less than $800 with a Vortex optic. Not sure which one. He seems happy, has not fired it yet.
Factory Anderson? Lots of home builds out there with Anderson lowers. Probably a good rifle either way, but you can check the barrel, etc to see what it is.

Okay ladies and gentlemen, my cousin wants to buy his first AR-15. I have not really had much interest in AR's lately. I would like some recommendation's if you please, his budget is $800 to $1000. He wants to use this for some hog hunting on his land and personal defense. His prior experience is with lever guns, bolts and some pistols. Any help is appreciated. TIA
Well, here's my favorite ar, colt sp1 pre ban 1981, 223/5.56

I would not consider an SP1 to be a suitable choice for a new AR-15 shooter. Sure it will shoot fine but there are better valued options out there.

What does "pre-ban" mean for this model of Colt?

Although you don't see people referring to the Colt AR-15 SP1 models as a pre-ban rifle it was made way before the first round of U.S. semi-auto rifle bans came into play (I can't remember what year). So I guess technically speaking it is considered a pre-ban model.
