Not in any way a gun topic but a rant about the phone companies and their failure to block or warn about spam calls. You know the routine, you get a call, same area code but not on your contact list. It may be a legitimate call but it is probably spam. You answer it to find that your auto warranty needs renewal or some such garbage. If you block the number you are probably blocking a legitimate number from someone in your community.

Do you mean to tell me that the phone company can not almost instantly tell that the caller ID number was not the originating number? Could they not list this as possible spam? Why do we have to put up with this when I am sure they have the tech to warn us or even block it?

    End of rant.

Haven't you been offered a "for pay" spam block service by your provider?
I haven't taken mine up on it, so I don't know if it does what you want.

It's a huge problem. The telemarketers and spammers got smarter! They buy up local numbers in your area code because they know you are more likely to answer the phone from a local number rather than a long distance one. The spammers are spoofing real local numbers in your area.

No I can't recall that. I have norobo on my home phone and it doesn't do much. All of that goes to voice mail. This would seem to be an easy thing to do on cell service and should not require an extra fee.

Correct, they spoof real numbers for the caller ID but that does not change the source number which does not match the caller ID number. The phone companies should be easily able to tell the source number.

With all of the technology, software, AI today - and they can't stop spoofing??

I just don't answer if the caller is not in my contact list. If it is valid they will leave a message.

I have no special anything, I just don't answer.

    We screen all calls.

They can leave a message and I 'may or not' return their call or they can go the hell away.

Easy enough to do without extra fees or gadgets or gizmos.

In my VM message, I state if you don't leave a message, I will block your number......

    ....and I do.............

    My phone rarely rings..........

I find it just as easy to answer the phone, as the ringing has already bothered me.
Then, it only takes 3 seconds to verify that it is indeed spam, hang up and block the number.

I answer it and play games with them. You can make a script ahead of time with a translation app and mix up languages! Haha

    ZX,

How many 'emergency' phone calls have you ever had?

    I'm guessing none.

OK, this question doesn't apply if you're a first responder...

The problem with that is that you are probably blocking a neighbors number and not the person that actually called you. I went that route too.

Sometimes it is a nurse calling from a doctor's office, how do you screen those as they are coming in?
