I have finished the cleaning on my 91/30 Mosin and am in love with it, can't wait to go shoot.

Tuesday I am buying the recoil pad that combat optical has for it along with some stripper clips for my ammo.

Now I am looking at buying the short barrel M38, I can live without the bayonet on the m44.

Anyone know where I can find surplus M38's? I looked on AIM surplus and some others and didnt find any.
I do plan on buying another recoil pad and one of the m44 muzzle brakes for it.

And can someone tell me how to get a hold of a good amount of surplus 7.62 ammo?

I bought my M38 at a show in Austin about 2 years ago. They were pretty common then. I haven't been looking for one since. I'm trying to find the M44 at a reasonable price.

IMHO, the recoil pad isn't necessary, unless you want a longer LOP or you really want to shoot from a bench. I can shoot my M38 from a standing position all day long and feel fine.

Stripper clips for the Mosin gave me more trouble than any benefit. I've been told that I got cheap clips, but I find loading one by one is easy enough, and doesn't result in a sliced thumb.

I've found AIM surplus usually has decent prices on 7.62X54R. I've also bought from JandCsales. I find a good spam can at gun shows sometimes, but usually the dealers bust open the cans and sell the 20round bundles individually. It's all corrosive light ball, so make sure you clean the rifle(s) after each range session, but it shoots fine.

And be careful when you get that M38. I like mine a lot more than my 91/30. If you enjoy your 91/30, you'll really like the shorty.

Thanks for the help outbreak, I think ill go to the range first before and see what I think before I buy a recoil pad. I just need to find a M38. If i do, I might put a scope on the 91 and leave the m38 with the iron sights.

And with AIM Surplus, you know why they wont sell rifle ammo to 21 and under?

You'll have a much easier time finding an M44 than a M38, they are more common. Also, most M38s I have seen have been counterbored, if that matters to you. I found mine at a gun show here in SA a few months back, it has a M38 stock that is pre-war (which is why I grabbed it). I may know of one just like it for sale here in SA if you are interested, drop me a line if you are...

And scratch the recoil pad and stripper clips. The former is for wusses and unless you are planning to take it into combat, the feeder clips aren't necessary.

As for ammo, check your local gun shops. I pick up milsurp 7.62x54R at the Powderhorn for $7.95 for 20 rounds.

Lastly, be careful of "Mosinitis!" I picked up my first in October 2009, and now have #13 inbound...

    Cheers! M2

I have two Mosins, they are great rifles. Look up cleaning procedure for corossive ammo, normal methods will not always clean the residue out fully. I use Birchwood Casey Muzzle Magic on a few patches, a few dry and then clean it regularly.

Check Sportsman's Guide for ammo, too. Last time I bought 7.62x54r they were the cheapest. +1 on what phatcyclist said about corrosive ammo... It's perfectly fine to shoot in your rifle, but you need to clean it promptly after shooting if you want your bore to last.
