Back when Mosins and 7.62x54R were cheap and plentiful, I came across this rifle. I was told at the time that it was an ex-Dragoon and it had some unusual markings. I can't recall any specifics about what was unusual about the markings. Any experts out there care to shed some light?

Did some internet sleuthing and the key questions are why is there a second set of markings on the hex receiver flats and what do they mean?

Most ex-Dragoons seem to only have markings on the barrel shank. This Mosin also has receiver markings: the Izhevsk mark followed by p, some unknown writing, and 44r (year 1944?). Why is there a second set of markings here? To indicate something big happened to it in 1944? Do other hex receiver Mosins have second sets of markings on the receiver flats? Was this rework special enough to warrant one? At least one net source said a p on the barrel shank means "parts" gun. Does a p on the receiver flat mean this was frankensteined in 1944? Finally, what does that middle line of receiver text mean? Also, I am not at all knowledgeable about all the little stamps all over the place in case they tell a story.

    Helotes!
Dan, I may have information on my laptop at home. I will check this evening.

There used to be a great website (7.62x54.net) for info on Mosin-Nagants, but it disappeared a few years back.

I cannot access the Wayback Machine website (https://web.archive.org/) at work but they will likely have captured copies the above website before its demise. Just search on the above link at that website to what is avialable. It was around for a long time so there should be most of it archived.

From my lousy memory, I can tell you the '44r' does mean the year, and most of the other proofs such as the diamond relate to refurbishments.

I will also see if I have pics of some of my hex receiver Mosins for comparison.

Otherwise, there are a few other websites that have some of that info...such as: https://www.m9130.info/markings-and-proofmarks

    Thanks Mike.

I may not be using wayback correctly. I entered the 7.62 website and clicked on a calendar entry. I got a blank page after a quick welcome message. I cannot tell if it is waiting to load the entire website or if there is nothing there. I tried another calendar entry and it gave me a "too many requests" error. Also it could be a functionality error with Wayback. Before the page goes blank, it says welcome to "62x54.net" so perhaps the "." in 7.62 is throwing it off. After a google search, maybe this website is now hosting the original content: https://www.igun.cz/

That second site is where I found that "p" means parts gun. I do need to check if I have matching serial numbers or "p" preceding various parts.
