    From the linked article.

“Mr. Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease,” the complaint continued. “The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”

The complaint said that Officer Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in total, including 2 minutes and 56 seconds after he appeared to have lost consciousness.”

A martial arts choke hold that cuts off blood flow through the carotid arteries would not cause asphyxiation. But continued long enough would result in death.

Exactly. Cutting off the blood supply will kill you just as dead as cutting off the air supply. The very reason many departments avoid using choke holds to subdue a suspect. Many departments have policies against using them at all.

    THIS. RELEVANT TRUTH.

SUFFOCATION WAS NEVER THE CLAIM EXCEPT BY THE IGNORANT.

Add to that the fact compression of the chest will kill you as well.

The officer was charged with what is basically negligent homicide. Clearly fitting.

According to Minnesota law, murder in the third degree is committed when there isn't intent or premeditation. A typical use of the third-degree murder charge would be used against a person who fired a gun in to a crowd or drove through a crowded sidewalk.
"Whoever, without intent to effect the death of any person, causes the death of another by perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life, is guilty of murder in the third degree," Minnesota statue says.

    Sounds similar to manslaughter.
