I read a story a while back very similiar to this one. An older man had been layed off and had three years before he could get SS, so he did the research and found robbing a bank for $1 would get him a three year stint. He had applied for every job he could, but was too old to hire, and the judge gave him what he wanted, three years in the clink.

Smart in a way... dumb in another. A responsible person would have just gone to the emergency room to get treated, and then negotiated a payment plan with the hospital.
