Police say man with weapons cache was preparing for 'Armageddon' - Local News Updates - The Boston Globe

A Manchester-by-the-Sea man who allegedly had a cache of weapons in his home told police he was preparing for Armageddon, authorities said.

Gregory D. Girard, 45, was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly storing several tear gas grenades and explosive pepper ball projectiles. He was also charged with the illegal possession of four police batons. Just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Manchester-by-the Sea police executed a search warrant at 23 Bridge St., police said in a statement. Girard faces four counts of possession of an infernal device and four counts of possession of a dangerous weapon. Additional charges are pending, police said.
"He indicated to police that he anticipated some form of Armageddon to take place shortly and he was getting prepared," Police Chief Glenn McKiel said.
In addition to the grenade-type devices, police found approximately 20 weapons, including high-powered rifles, shotguns, and handguns. All of the firearms were purchased and registered legally within the past 10 months, McKiel said.
Girard, a computer consultant, had a Class A license, which enabled him to purchase large-capacity firearms. According to police, he was granted the permit without question.
“He did not have a criminal record and there was no indication at the time [the permit] was issued that he shouldn’t have one,” McKiel said.
McKiel added police are not allowed to ask applicants why they are seeking a firearms permit.
Police also found a large collection of camouflage clothing, knives, bulletproof vests, helmets, and eight pairs of handcuffs in Girard’s home. They also discovered stockpiles of medicine and non-perishable foods. An illegal indoor shooting range was also found in the attic, police said.
Police seized all the weapons and ammunition and revoked Girard’s license to carry firearms.
Tactical officers evacuated two other condominium units in Girard's building and brought residents to the police department while the search was completed.
Salem District Court Judge Richard Mori ordered Girard held without bail after he pleaded not guilty at his arraignment this morning. Mori slated a dangerousness hearing for Feb. 12.

I sure hope there is more to this story that what the reporter wrote. If you read the text he was arrested for the tear gas grenades and the police batons....the rest of the stuff he had appearantly wasnt illegal yet this (dare I say left leaning) reporter tries to paint a picture by stating that he had guns and emergency supplies. I guess this is another reason not to live up north. Funny how the Dept of Homeland security tells people to have an emergency plan and have emergency supplies on hand and when this guy does so, the press tries to humiliate him for it.

Dont get me wrong, if tear gas and police batons are illegal in Massechusetts, I have no problem with that being addressed, but it rubs me the wrong way everytime I see the press try to paint those who want to have supplies on hand for a "rainy day" as crazy people.

    Rant over....

So this guy was arrested for possession of condiments and sticks?

View From The Porch: If the pants fit, wet them.

It is and always has been my possession that we are a nation of laws...so whether I agree or disagree with batons and tear gas (not exactly a condiment) being illegal, in his state it is....and if he wanted to possess those he should have moved to where it is legal to possess those items.

My issue is the picture that has been painted of the guy because he had guns and emergency supplies. Perhaps the reporter needs to be shown footage of New Orleans in the 96 hours after Katrina. Those that had guns and emergency supplies were bedded down with food in theor bellies and fending off the roaming gangs of thieves....those that hadnt prepared were pillaging and looting, or holding out their hands screaming for the govt to feed them.....how soon we forget.

    question:

If the tear gas grenades and the batons were illegal, why would they confiscate the rest of his guns? Revoke his license, sure, but it sounds like there was lots of stuff that wasn't illegal that was confiscated (and he should have had the ability to dispossess of legally).

I dont know Mass. law but they are a far left state and if they dictate a license is required to possess those weapons and his license was revoked, that may lead to confiscation.

Self sufficiency is now illegal. You MUST rely on the all powerful wizard in the event of an emergency. If you stock pile your own supplies, you are a kook, whack job, anti-American bozo that must be locked up in jail or the loony bin.

I call BS. It says they were purchased in the last 10 months. That probably was the reason, he bought more weapons than the socialist government thinks you should in 10 months.

    Two comments:
    1. I spent some time working in the NE. This sort of thing happens a lot. A guy got arrested in NY and charged with carrying a deadly weapon - a softball bat. He was on his way home from a softball game. Stopped for some minor infraction, got lippy with the cop, off to jail. NY also has laws restricting the number of guns you can own without begging their indulgence.

    2. Thank God for letting me live in Texas.

Wow, glad we live in Texas. Under those restrictions, we would all get locked up every winter for creating Weapons of Mass Destruction....at least that's what the little lady says every time I make some good old Texas Chili!

If you listen carefully to what that news piece says it basically just lists things (weapons, ammo, medicine) that the man wanted to have on hand, no crime...but in many states having a couple people state in an affidavit that you are a danger to yourself can trigger a psychological evaluation. I believe that this guys problems started when he decided to start firing rifles in the 3rd floor of a house in a residential area. that coupled with telling his wife "not to talk to people" may have started to raise the red flags.
While the press may have blown this out of proportion, this guy may have been a little "off"
