They let a big one get to Montana before it was apparently noticed. Then, supposedly, they did know but decided not to do anything because it wasn't deemed a threat.Then they said that Trump let them go all the time. Now they are saying that they never realized they were there because we never had radar looking for them. If nobody knew they were there before, how do they know Trump never did anything about them either? And if nobody knew they were there, what the hell is he supposed to do about them in the first place.

Japan proved in WWii that they can be launched from a long way away and the jet stream will carry them for the most part. They just did not have the tech to make it a viable weapon back then.
But we do now.
A large cargo tanker or carier would be perfect to choose which areas to target. Inflate, arm and release. And you stay well out in the open ocean.

Lots of jokes and politics in this thread but not much about the technology, something I would think we'd all take some interest in.

If you're curious how they work and how these balloons are different, the best tech savvy overview that's not so much your eyes glaze over is the first 80% of this video. For good measure, he ends with his own theory about their purpose but at least he admits he totally pulled his theory out of his butt with no evidence. The first part of the video, though, is excellent.
