Success, yesterday I spent two+ hours fixing my laptop that I killed with just a tiny bit of water on the touchpad.
No amount of drying it out over several weeks worked. Bought a used top plate which includes the touchpad and lots of other electronic modules (ebay for $20) some months ago. Gave myself a less than 50/50 chance of success.
Bottom line, lots of tiny screws - 5 different sizes, sharp knife all the way around to get past the glue. Only 8 screws left over ! Works great now.
It was designed for easy replacement of the keyboard but nothing else. It was great to clean out 8 years of dirt from the cooling system.
I can’t believe the tiny little fold-over cable clamps that attach the many wide multi-conductor flat cables really work.
