Some blued firearms (or parts of them) just have a crap finish and will rust quicker than those with a better finish.

In my experience once rust starts it's a never ending battle to prevent it.

Sand it down and paint it.

    Exactly.
A buddies cheap Remington 870 Express had a horrible finish.
No matter what he did it would show rust after only a few days, especially the chamber.

Rust is insidious, once Fe metal has rusted, it will rust easier the next time. CLR or iron out and a brass brush to kill the rust, and boiling water to rinse. Coat with oil or wax

My 870 has a similar issue. I only use it for skeet, and I don’t know how it happened, but after close inspection tonight I can see small pitting in the blued area. However, the barrel is spotless. Other than the previous issues Remington has had over the years, I guess shoddy coating should be added to the mix.

There was a period where many Remington Model 870 Express shotguns had very bad rusting issues, regardless of how well they were cleaned and oiled after cleaning, and regardless of the brand of oil used, and many would develop rust within several days after being cleaned. The higher the humidity level, the faster the rust would develop.

I think many ended up solving the issue with a complete stripping of the finish from all the metal surfaces and just starting from square one with either a good hot blueing, or some of the other finishes like CerraKote or some similar.

Honestly, I think starting over is the only solution that will completely solve the issue. Remington just didn't do something right at the factory with these shotguns for several years. Been lots of talk on many gun forums over they years on this subject.
