So I decided that I would fill my freezer with buffalo instead of beef this year. Booked a hunt and took a 1000 pound 2 yo bull.
Took it to hunters creek processing because it was close and they had good online reviews. When I got my meat back there is only 140 pounds. All of it ground and stew meat. They kept all my steaks. Then when I asked them about it they said the animal was only 350 and that was all there was. I tried to leave a bad review but it was taken off.

I googled a couple of references and they came up with between 40 and 55% meat. There are a lot of variables on the weight and on how the meat is processed (bone-in vs. no bones, for example). Assuming that the 1,000 lb buffalo might be an approx. weight, there should have been around 400+ lbs of meat.

If that is all they gave I think I would file charges for theft because there is no way in heck that is everything. How in the heck do you not get one steak out of a whole animal? Being bad at it is one thing but 15% is more than that.

Unfortunately it is one of those my word against them and all the legal people I have talked to say the only thing I can do is this. Tell others and hope they don't get the same treatment.
I was expecting between 400 and 450 pounds of meat

Just talked to a buddy of mine. He processed 4 buffalo last year.
Don't expect much steak at all. Mostly ground meat. The ribcage is huge.
    He netted 35%.

I would have never left the place with that little of meat.

hindsite it easy, but that wasn't even close to right. Its good to talk about what you are expecting when you drop an animal off that way if you are expecting too much, at least he can explain why.

I would imagine the bill wasn't cheap either

Buffalo were known for their generous hide and not necessarily their meat yield.
I think your expectations were along the lines of a steer and far as yield. And it just isn't the case.

I got 600 lb off of a 1100 lb steer 2 years ago.
I wish I could do that again!

What was your 1000 pound estimate based off of? How much field dressed?

Some hunting forum may give you better results. Do we not have a hunting subforum?
