Pretentious, pedantic... some have a remarkable talent for turning a reasonably entertaining thread into a headache.

I'd venture most of us have guns in many calibers and further suggest we like most of them. If .40 S&W can precipitate such demagoguery I'd almost hesitate to mention the venerable .303 British

    Nah. .303 is cool.

If that's the case why does 40 Short and Weak have a case length of .850 and drives a 155gr bullet at 1300 FPS AND the 10MM has a length of .990 and drives the same bullet at 1450 FPS.

Ever hear of the difference between the 38 SP and the 357 Mag? Sound familiar.

For reference old slabsides drives a 200 gr at 1000FPS and the 10MM gets one up to 1150FPS

    Ref: Hornady #10 reloading manual

You’ve got that completely backwards. .40 S&W is far more powerful than 10mm. And the FBI statistics back that up. Double blind testing has proven than 10mm lacks the necessary stopping power for defensive use which is why the FBI dropped it way back in the ‘70s.

I’m pretty much an expert on the caliber. Recommend you stop before you make yourself look silly.

If .40 wasn't that powerful, it wouldn't constantly blow up glocks.

Did you mean to say that FBI dropped the 10mm in the Seventies?

The 10 was introduced in 1983 and the 40 SW in 1990. I do realize the the 40 and 41 AE development went further back.

I am truly interested in the history of these two cartridges if you have more to offer. I’m not being snarky or argumentative, I would like to know if there is more to the story.

For as far as you can trust wiki,

The 10mm Auto was developed by American Jeff Cooper and introduced in 1983 with the Bren Ten pistol.

Selected initially by the FBI in 1989, they backed off stating that recoil was excessive. Also that the pistols were too big for some small-handed individuals.

These issues led to the .40 S&W.

10 mm will push 180 gr at 1300 fps.

Yes, I agree. That is my understanding as well. I was an Early adopter of the 10mm with my first Bren Tens in 83-84. I’m also aware of the FBI shuffle.

Youngun says he is an expert, I want to hear what he knows that the rest of us do not.

BTW- no current 10mm pistol shoots as sweet as a Bren Ten.

Will have to see if the new CZ 10 comes close.

I'm pretty sure he is joking.
