I picked up my first bolt action 22 to slow down my ammo consumption and maybe be more accurate than my other semis or lever actions. First impressions, it's light and points really well. It comes with 2 cheek risers. The low rise is perfect for the irons, but the riser piece paired with an optic is like sex with your wife, comfortable and repeatable. Trigger pull came set at 4.5 lbs, and the barrel has a target crown. I cleaned it, added a Nikon Rimfire and went to sight it in with 6 different ammo choices. Stinger 40gr, Winchester 40gr power point, Winchester 37gr varmint he, Winchester 36gr bulk hp, Federal 36gn bulk, and Monarch 36gr hp bulk.

10 shot groups except for the initial sight in. All did "ok", but the best groups came from either the federal or Winchester bulk ammo. Left target bottom left and center is the Federal and left target bottom right was Winchester.

I took it home and watched a YouTube video where a guy just flat removes the spring that puts preload on the trigger. I found the trigger while only 1.5 lbs, didn't reliably reset, so I trimmed a coil off of the aforementioned spring and reinstalled. The trigger pull settled in at 2.3 lbs and resets every time. So in conclusion, a sub $200 rifle shoots decent groups with the cheapest ammo you can feed it, and comes with a nice trigger that you can improve on. I'm happy with it.

I sure like mine. I get the best groups from Eley(big surprise) and CCI Standard velocity. If you want the trigger lighter, pull the main spring out, and just use the trigger blade spring. I wouldn't do that in the field, but on a bench, it's kinda nice.

Do they come with a heavy barrel or is that an option ?
I don't think so. Mines kinda medium sized, but threaded which is kinda nice. I do have a heavy barreled Savage though. Another nice bolt .22 rifle.

I love my ruger american .22lr. I took it to the range today along with one of my 10/22s. I have a vortex 2-7x on it right now. I was shooting at 100 yards easily.

Thats the spring that I cut a coil off of to lighten the pull and still have a reliable reset

    https://www.ruger.com/products/americanRimfire/overview.html

They do though, to me, it's just personal preference.

Ruger puts great quality barrels on very economically rifles benefiting us all.
Bull barrel vs standard thinner barrel is inconsequential at usual hunting/plinking distances. Maybe at a bench the bull is more accurate. Maybe.
Ammo selection is far more important than which barrel you might prefer.

The heavy barrels are threaded. Lighter ones are not. A dealbreaker for some buyers.

My heavy barrel is in .17 HMR so my experience is limited to that.

I was able to pick up an American Rimfire from Bud's last month for $189. I couldn't pass it up. I've only been able to mount the scope and do a quick site in. From the few, 6 or 7, shots I took, it seems really good.
