If ever in the need for a solid mount gun vise a small woodworking vise works awesome.
I lined mine with 1/4" flat rubber for protection. Have made many gun stocks as well as just overall working on rifles with this vise. Mounting and bore sighting scopes removing or installing barreled actions, trigger gaurds and recoil pads.
Also come in handy for a variety of other uses.
I had to remove a tab on this one to mount it on the bench.

    Very nice!

I bought some plastic inserts for my bench vise that seems to do the job well for small pieces that I have needed to secure.

The School of the American Rifle YouTube channel uses blocks he made out of cut pieces of Trex decking that he wrapped in leather. I might try fashioning something like that if I need a more secure hold but I really like your approach too.
