Is 6 months a little bit 'overkill' for a renewal notice?

Should I wait a few months or just renew now?
I don't remember even my DRIVER's lic getting a notice this far in advance.

My car tags usually come with only a few months advance notice.

Does DPS really need 6 months to 'check-me-out'?

Yes, it does. For several reasons DPS took over six months to process my last renewal (which wasn't my first). The paperwork got lost, they had issues with my military status (I should have gotten a free renewal being in the TXSG), and other issues that delayed it getting to me. I actually had a week where I didn't have a valid LTC.

The process is a bit more complicated than a simple license plate renewal.

Plus, I've always gotten a noticed six months prior, even back when it was a CHL.

Procrastinate if you want, but I'd do it sooner rather than later!

I submitted the online form for review a few days ago. In checking back, on the checklist background check and fingerprints are “under review”. Everything else is checked off. Is this normal? Thanks.

I wouldn't cut no closer than 1.5 months.

Yeah - don't sweat it....generally speaking, unless you've been in trouble since your last renewal, they're just checking the boxes. Some take a bit longer than others.

For those concerned about the time to get your renewed LTC: Mine expires in June 2023 so December 4, 2022 I sent in my renewal application with payment online using the email that TX DPS sent out. I got the new one in the mail on January 9, 2023. With the holidays taking only a month I thought was great. Now the looks of it are another issue for another forum.

So now I'm confused. Y'all keep talking about B&W LTC and color DL. Mine is the exact opposite. My DL is black and white while my (original issue) LTC is color. Granted, I haven't laid eyes on the new LTC yet but it's been waiting for me at home since early November.
Anyone else have B&W DL? My wife DL and LTC are both color.
