I've never shot any, or owned any revolvers. I'm starting to take an interest in them. In particular, I'd be interested in getting a .357 Magnum. The Ruger GP100, Dan Wesson 715 and Smith and Wesson 686 have all caught my eye. Any recommendations for nice .357 magnums to look at? Anything that would be good to know for someone just getting into them?

Welcome to the dark side. Warning, they multiply easily!:D

All of those are good choices. I'm partial to Smiths myself so the 686 or 686+ would be my recommendation to start with. The L frame is a great combination of size and shootability.

If you can, take the time to shoot several and see what you like.

No advice in particular, other than don't slam the cylinder shut.

I like your style Dye but have you considered the older DW 15?

    All classic options.

Consider the Kimber k6S.... the factory trigger is so crisp.

It's also great for carry; slimmest profile among the 6 round cylinders.

ETA: I'd be glad to let you pop a few cylinders from mine! It's the 3 inch barrel; they make longer versions if that's your preference.

I like the look of the vent rib on the barrel of the 715 a lot. Reminds me of the python. I'm just not interested in the modern remake of the python because my gut says not to trust the quality.

The Dan Wesson 15-2 is also extremely attractive, like the one in the pic below.

I like the S&W 686+ 6" and the competition, as well as the GP100 Competition. If I went with a S&W, I'd probably go with something from their performance center.

I'll have to look at the SP101

The K6s DASA 3" is a really nice looker. Looks like it would be a pretty comfortable carry as well

Very nice looker and even better shooter...

I carry an additional 6 in the little swift strip which is really handy, actually. Allows for fast loading 2 at a time.

I've owned Smith 686's and they are tried and true. However, this K6S is something else. Can't speak for the others mentioned from direct experience so certainly I'm no expert.

The slim profile make for easy appendix or 4 o'clock carry.

The Ruger GP 100 was my duty carry gun for many years back in the day. That thing handled everything we put it through and never gave me any issues. It's built like a tank. My brother carried the 686 for many years and he never had issues with his. I couldn't tell you how many rounds we put through those but never had an issue. The trigger was only slightly better on the 686. Either way you can't go wrong.

The older Dan Wesson revolvers hava a cult following! My father has owned several over the years. They are quite accurate, well made and just a pleasure to shoot.

The older S&W revolvers are awesome to shoot. Decently accurate, and had some of the best factory triggers on the market.

Ruger? They offer some great options, older versions and newer ones to choose from. Built like tanks and can probably handle much hotter loads than most other brands of revolvers. Decently accurate, but the triggers are not as good as some other brands. Not bad, just not great either. Good luck finding a Six series revolver! People that own them, very seldom ever sell them.

...and we pay for it when we want to add barrels, different shrouds, etc.

Luckily for me, I've been rather restrained when it comes to buying DW revolvers and parts because of the prices, but yeah, left unchecked, I could go broke. Funny enough, I've seen some good deals on barrels and shrouds on Ebay.

But I can't lie. Everyday I get a little closer to saying "F-it!" and just buying an entire pistol pack and being done with it. :)
