Ive been shooting at these targets for a couple of months.Mainly pistol at 15 yards or so, with some 5.56 & 7.62x39 thown in at 100 yards. From what ive read 3/8" should be rated to .308 & 30-06. Today i shot it with a .270 & Hornady SST's at 100 yards & ended up with 3 holes in my plate.

Also shot 1/2" AR500 with it... & no issues.

Any thoughts other than heat treat wasnt done correct.
Or is .270 got something .308 dont have?

    Hornady 130gr SST's

If it was Hornady's factory loaded ammo, it should have been moving at around 3000 FPS at 100 yards. That would cause pitting (most targets I've seen suggest keeping the velocity at the target under 2800 FPS to prevent damage), but not holes like that. I think you got a target that wasn't heat treated properly. Who did you buy it from?

Am I the only one looking at those for a while, thinking "they look drilled, not shot"?
Could a neighbor be having some fun with you?
The holes are shot. The steel is smeared at the edge from recoil effect. (Not recoil with guns. Think asteroid)

Perhaps. Yet we have all shot through metal before. Think of an aluminum can or a car door. There is always SOME dimpling of the metal around a hole. This shows little to none.

Good observation. Now that you mention it I'm inclined to agree.
One would think that a bullet penetrating steel plate wouldn't remove any steel plate material, but instead would deform it enough to create a hole. The photo looks like plate material was removed, ie drilled out.

I can assure you the 3 holes were not drilled out....lol. The only thing i can think of is bad steel. I purchased the plates from ebay. I will send out an email to the seller & see what they say.

Oh, eBay. Any chance the seller is in China?
    Good luck. Keep us posted!
