You don’t think it has anything to do with the virus getting weaker?

Multiple large studies from alpha variant, delta, to omicron show a reduced risk of severe disease (hospitalization and death) with all the vaccines (better with the Pfizer and Moderna than J&J). Clearly omicron is causing less disease. Is it causing less disease because it is less virulent? Or is it because we, as a group, are more immune because pretty much everyone has had COVID and/or gotten vaccinated? Maybe both. I think the answer is both.

BTW, PCR tests are absolutely fantastic. Like all tests, they aren’t perfect. They can detect really small amounts of DNA or RNA. This is both a positive and a negative. And very few people really get the idea behind positive predictive value and negative predictive value. While I am generally not in favor of testing asymptomatic people who are low risk, the prevalence of omicron is really high right now.
