I need to find someone who can design a MOLLE compatible backsheath for a 42" carbon steel katana. Actually it would be great if the backsheath could utilize Blackhawk speedclips so that it can be quickly relocated to another location on a MOLLE rig not unlike a pistol holster going from cross draw to a thigh.

    Any ideas?

    I know it's a very strange request. :)

I am military, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be allowed even though I can prove that I won't lop my own head off. ;) I spend a lot of time participating in kenjutsu and gumdo sword practice competitively and feel quite comfortable with a sword in my hand.

I guess the idea kind of stemmed from the thought of vigilantes like Batman or the Punisher roaming the streets at night and I was wondering if anyone had ever designed a tactical sword sheath for just that sort of thing.

But just in case it WERE allowed, I do want one in both black (my home MOLLE) and ACU digital coloring.

I don't know from personal experience, but a buddy of mine had a company named Tiger Tactical (I think) make some custom MOLLE M14 mag pouches. I saw them after they got delivered and they seemed to be top notch. I got transfered to the border not too long after so I don't know how well they held up, but I never heard any horror stories, for what that's worth. They may be Canadian (he is), but I'm sure they'd deal with you.

That sounds like a good place to start...

A friend of mine suggested that a company custom designed some tactical sword equipment for the movie series "Blade" and they may have some solutions, but I'm not sure what that company may have been.

Edit: I sent an email to Tiger Tactical about the custom request, I'll be curious to hear what they have to say about it... or if they just laugh me off their website. :)

lol... sounds like fun. I want pictures when you get it figured out. Have you contacted any kydex holster makers? I think it'd be a pretty easy request for anyone experienced with kydex.

Is that what Fobus makes their holsters out of? I'm trying to get a mental picture of the type of material that kydex is... some kind of plastic-y acrylic isn't it? That would probably make a pretty good material for the inside of a sheath if it can stand up to the wear and tear of an actual battle-ready sword.

Kydex is a black thermoplastic. Can be moulded into damn near anything and is pretty resilient. It's used quite a bit for knife sheaths so I dunno why it wouldn't work on a sword.

I still haven't heard back from Tiger Tactical.

Guess they don't care about my business.

I wonder if aircraft grade magnetics coated in kydex would make an effective sheath. I bet that would make it really inexpensive to do since it would use a lot less material... like taking one of those Blackhawk QuickClips, a kydex coated aircraft-grade magnet on top of it, and boom! Instant quick-sheath that you could really put ANYWHERE on your MOLLE rig.

    Hows that sound?
