Anyone else notice how Colt Commanders have longer triggers than Colt govt models?
    Are they interchangeable?
I’ve not found anything regarding why this is done, nor if it’s a factory option.

As stated, the triggers will interchange. The difference in triggers is the trigger shoe itself, being either longer or shorter.

As @AZ Refugee mentioned, differences between a M1911, and the M1911A1 which was fitted with the shorter trigger starting in about 1924.

The Colt Commander came along in about 1949, so I'm assuming it could have fitted with either trigger? Personal preference in regards to the trigger though.

now I’m looking at the rest of the 1911. looks like the arched mainspring housing came as an A1 (attempt to adjust natural pointability).

long triggers with flat housings / short triggers with arched housings

Arched or flat? Personal preference. When I first got into 1911's many years ago, most available had the arched MSH. Years later, it became a trend for the factory 1911's to come with the older M1911 flat MSH.

After shooting a friend's 1911 with the flat MSH, I too prefer them.
