I have a lead on a nice decommissioned transferable Tommy gun. Any thoughts on its value? I don't know much about them or how to tell a good one from a bad one.

Is it a deactivated war trophy (DEWAT?)

Those can be reactivated by sending in the form 1 and paying the $200 tax. If it has all or mostly original USGI parts it'd be worth more than the West Hurley copies which are currently sitting around $18-20k on various NFA ad boards.

Condition & method of dewating makes a big difference in price. Provenance could run the price up further if tied to the right person or battle. Registered dewats are become harder to find. I would ask to see what else he may have in his possession.

Something else to look @ on this is if the series number upper & lower match. I would want to see the form 4 to see who it list as manufacturer. That could tell you who rewetted the gun. A FOIA on the gun would be something else you might want if you were to buy it.

You'll need to do lots of research:
These things you will need to know, all set the price.
Maker Colt, Auto Ordnance, Savage, NAC, ect.
    Where made, Bridgeport, West Hurley.
    Model: M1, M1A1, 1928, 1921, 1927.
Condition, matching numbers, correct configuration, barrel, comp, sights, ect.
    Accessories.

    Go here, and read, research.

Dewat guns can be of several conditions. the "best" would be recommissioning a simple welded barrel.
The least desirable would be a rewelded cut up receiver. Anywhere from about $13K for a welded rcvr M1 on up to 20K + for a nice 1928A1. I highly doubt anyone welded up a Colt 1921.
