Before Obama I had 14 AK's, after he was elected I sold them
I remembered something a late friend who survived Omaha beach and WWII told me called "common ammo"
When he and the others ran into dead solders/paratroopers inland they took their ammo due to it being the same ammo they used
If there was a SRHTF scenario I would be looking for common ammo which best to my knowledge would have been ... 5.56/223, 308, 9mm & 45, so I bought a AR to cover 5.56/223
With the event(s) going on right now I started wondering if I should have kept at least 2 of the AK's ... 7.62x39 & 5.45x39, would these two be considered "common ammo" in a SRHTF scenario like the other 4

If you have 14 AK’s, how much ammo did you have? I’d assume a lot.

Regardless, 7.62*39 seems like a common caliber to me.
At the time around 900rds when I started selling, it was cheap back then

    Including ammo I fired ... around 1300rds

That's interesting. Most people were buying.

While it's "common", it's mostly imports.

Best to stick to NATO calibers for practical stuff. 5.7, 9mm, 5.56, .308, and .50 BMG covers damn near everything.

Well, hate to “Monday morning QB”, but back then 1000 rounds of either cartridge was around $100. I’d have sold a couple and bought some cases of ammo if that was an option.

There are so many different potential SHTF scenarios that it is difficult to make such a decision and very costly to cover them all.

I don't consider 5.7 and 5.45 to be good choices because I don't consider them to be NATO staples or even common enough.

Although I'm not a fan of either 5.56, 7.62x39, or 9mm, they are likely the best choices for commonality and plentifulness. But my primary choice was 22LR because I feel it is the most practical for the SHTF scenario I most expect and the lower expense doesn't preclude stockpiling.

    5.7 is NATO?

    .50 BMG is practical?

Agree with the others…and add .22LR
    Yes, 5.7 is nato.

.50 bmg might not be the most practical, but it does the job. Personally i think at that point it's not going to be a high round count gun, a .300wm or .338lm would be more useful

I bought the first 7.62x39 AK in 1999, Tula ammo at Academy was $5-6.00 a box

In 2001 I bought a Polish tantal 5.45x39 and ammo was around $7.00 a box

I also had some surplus 7.62x39

Before the Coof, in the Golden Age of the Trump Slump, 7.62x39 was going for .20cpr. $200/case. Where were you shopping?

I have focused most of my ammo acquisitions with.............

    .50 BMG, 7.62X51, .556, 7.62X39, 7.62X54, 9mm, 45 acp and 22LR..........

I have multiples of firearms that shoot those calibers....and think those would be the most useful for me If TWEAWKI, imho....

    7.62NATO, 7.62X39, 5.56NATO/.223, 22LR, .45ACP, .357Mag, 9mm,12Ga...

    30.06, 30/30Win, .45Colt, .380ACP, 20Ga are secondaries.

While I think these the most common and the most likely to be found on a dead body or confiscated from a live one, they are also the least likely to be found left on a store shelf...

Stores being a long way from me, they are my best bet!
