Notice al the on-line iphone gambling apps ads on TV lately? And a university sponsoring on-line sports gambling? Good way for people to go broke. Odds are always against gamblers. Just enough payout to keep em coming. Keep out of Texas!!!
Casino, lottery, on-line apps, card or dice game - some are going to find a way to lose their money.
When I worked a rotating shift some of us would go to Tunica when we got off in the mornings. Most of us got a good breakfast buffet and bet a few dollars, but some would gamble money they could afford to lose.

The Indian Casinos are not run by Indians. They are run by mega corporation in the gaming world. The tribe gets their cut, more than the big guys 10%. There was one in Commiefornia that paid the tribe $20 million per month. The tribe took care of their own and also collected monthly from Uncle Sugar. The tribe all had huge mansions but the area was close to poverty no love for Indians here
A friend of mine is a Potawatomi. Their reservation in OK has a casino or bingo place (I forget which). They've been suing the gambling corporation that runs the place to try to get their share for 20 years. It takes the signature of a federal judge to go forward and the judge won't sign. A small number of people make the vast majority of the money, and corruption is everywhere.

From what I've seen in a state with only Indian casinos... they tend to be located in areas that aren't high-income areas (duh, Reservations and Indian own lands tend to not be doing terribly well) but they did generally pay higher wages than the surrounding businesses. People in those areas sought work at the casinos because of the steady work and higher pay.

The issue I have with Indian casinos - I'm a non-smoker, and I really don't enjoy breathing in cigar or cigarette smoke - and since Indian land is semi-sovereign, they all allow indoor smoking. I don't gamble much - I'll buy the occasional lotto ticket, and the last time I gambled beyond that was 16 years ago on my honeymoon. $20 into the slots, lost it, and walked away. I'm not against casinos in general though, because people will still gamble, legally or not. Might as well try to extract *some* positives from it, in the form of taxes or at least jobs for people.

If the state authorizes non-Indian casinos, the state and thus, theoretically, we the people, get to control them and not the tribes. And if Texas does allow casinos, and they're promoted and built nicely - it will draw in tourist dollars from other areas, will it necessarily help the local economy? Maybe. Like I said - locals where I've seen them sought out the casino jobs because of the higher pay. That has to help some, even if its not a magical brush that wipes away all the poverty.

Just don't plunk them down near the damn ghettos, or in places where EMS, law enforcement, and the hospitals are overwhelmed unless a chunk of that casino profit goes to upgrading those services. I'm sure they'll wind up allowing casinos to have their own damn police departments like so many other organizations do though, so who knows.

Well if Casinos come to Texas I am sure that there will be one in Kemah or Galveston. I Imagine Tillman Fertitta has enough pull to get one. Not sure who has the pull in Dallas and SA or anywhere south of us

Corpus Christi area seems like it might suit a casino - given the proximity to S. Padre & Mustang Islands.

There's already an indian casino in Eagle Pass, if I remember, so maybe another would open in the El Paso area to compete for business. Maybe some rich land owner would see the opportunity to build up a Las Vegas style place somewhere in the hill country too, or down near Laredo.

Haven't been to Kemah yet, but a bunch of people have said we should go just to see it, and maybe get some seafood. Its one of those things that, while close, its still a hell of a drive thanks to traffic, so if I take the wife, we'll probably get a hotel for the night.

The Lucky Eagle Casino is in Eagle Pass and has been there for some time. I think the Kickapoo tribe hosts this casino... not sure how it works. I could care less if they build casinos but doubt that Medina County would be keen on the idea unless it feathered the politico's pockets in some manner. You think my property taxes would go down? hehe

Not a drive I would make to a tourist trap.

How much has Louisiana or Oklahoma profited by having casinos? Are the roads better paved? The schools better supplied?

I have nothing against gambling, but all the predictions of great windfalls for the public are nothing but vapor. A handful of people get rich and nobody else profits.

Just look at the Lottery in Texas. It was going to raise money for schools. Billions of dollars have passed through the system, but did our schools get better? Did our taxes go down? Nope and nope.
    BINGO!
I believe the answer is very little for most citizens.
And very expensive for many who are already strained finances.
I expect Legislators (or their kin) have sweetheart deals to have masked financial positions in these deals as have happened in previous big deals.

    Not interested.

Other than some low wage jobs, Casinos bring little to nothing beneficial to the State.

entertainment for a decent amount of the population is a big benefit.

Just because you do not like a nice Poker game now and then does not mean its worthless.

in addition most large and established casino's offer more than gambling.
    and end up with
    Fine dining
Most have a theater or area for concerts
