How much has Louisiana or Oklahoma profited by having casinos? Are the roads better paved? The schools better supplied?

I have nothing against gambling, but all the predictions of great windfalls for the public are nothing but vapor. A handful of people get rich and nobody else profits.

Just look at the Lottery in Texas. It was going to raise money for schools. Billions of dollars have passed through the system, but did our schools get better? Did our taxes go down? Nope and nope.

My son worked in Las Vegas for several years. It's a weird town. The casino area is actually pretty small. The surrounding community is full of crime, corruption, drugs, and people barely scraping by. You look for a home or apartment in a gated area because otherwise you have a steady stream of "homeless" wandering through trying to find an unlocked door or a window they can sneak through. Also coyotes looking to eat your pets.

Harrah's built a huge casino/hotel on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Cherokee, NC. Go 1 mile in any direction and you'll see heartbreaking poverty. It was promised to bring much needed help to the local economy.

When SC was trying to get the lottery voted in, the profits were to be used for schools and education. They even named it the South Carolina Education Lottery. No changes to the education system. If the state needs money for something, they "borrow" it from the lottery money.

I'm not against gambling, if a person wants to gamble they will find a way.

The Indians get the money, just read about all development Choctaw has done for their people. Recently, the Oklahoma governor tried to raise the percentage the state receives and that died real quick. So very little money goes into a general fund and I agree, just a handful of people get rich. I recently saw a tech opening with Choctaw and the wages they paid were extremely low...gotta keep those profits! The small town I was born in near Choctaw is now a meth-town. A lot of workers live in rundown houses and take drugs to work extreme hours.

It's like the lottery or towns that want to go from dry to wet. Promises of jobs and tax relief that never occurs.

The Indian Casinos are not run by Indians. They are run by mega corporation in the gaming world. The tribe gets their cut, more than the big guys 10%. There was one in Commiefornia that paid the tribe $20 million per month. The tribe took care of their own and also collected monthly from Uncle Sugar. The tribe all had huge mansions but the area was close to poverty no love for Indians here

casinos won’t have a major impact here just like they don’t in Louisiana, but it’s still money leaving the state that could remain in the state.

Not wanting casinos in texas is the Republican version of the dems pretending it’s more green if we buy foreign oil than drill our own.

PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GAMBLEIT JUST MAKES SENSE TO KEEP THAT MONEY HERE IN TEXAS INSTEAD OF IT LEAVING THE STATE?
    Exactly.

Crime, homelessness, drugs, corruption, lack of school funds. I beleave we have this regardless of the presents or absence of legal gaming, or casinos. Expecting the gaming industry to solve this, seems a bit pollyannaish. Do we expect any other industry to solve the problems of the surrounding community, fund education, house the homeless, solve corruption? Why does this always become the touchstone for allowing legal gaming. Why must we send it elswhere.

The house always wins. ALWAYS and only the house.
Texas Legiscritters may wisely catch on that more low paying service jobs are not the path to success.
If they don't win they don't make a profit. Is there an industry designed to not win or make a profit? All fast-food chains are designed around low paying service jobs and making a profit. Resorts/ammusment parks are designed around mostly low-paying service jobs and making a profit. Should gaming use a model that only allows for high paying jobs and not making a profit. Why send this taxable profit to another State.

Yes, the lotto was supposed to go to benefit the schools. And it did go to the schools, but not in the way we were led to believe it would.

I personally don‘t have an issue with casino gambling in Texas, as long as it is in a secluded area and not along any of the already congested areas of the state

I agree. Addressing zoning should be considered in planning for any large industry. I play cards with the guys now and then, so I have no skin in the game. It is amusing others attach social engineering, and correcting society's ills, with any gaming proposal.

I don’t have a problem with it. I occasionally go to Louisiana to gamble (not expecting to come back rich).

I don’t think it’ll lead to some sort of societal collapse here.

“…to provide tax relief and funding for education and public safety by creating the Texas Gaming Commission,…”

They sold the lottery on that same song and dance. Ask yourself this; why does the state government need more tax dollars?

Fix education funding system first, then come ask me about destination casinos.

Notice al the on-line iphone gambling apps ads on TV lately? And a university sponsoring on-line sports gambling? Good way for people to go broke. Odds are always against gamblers. Just enough payout to keep em coming. Keep out of Texas!!!
