Leupold VX5 - their zero stop function is super handy to have when your shots can be anywhere from 100-400yds and you have to adjust in a hurry.

Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm. I've had several and it's a superb big game scope. Lightweight, compact and easily mounted on a long action. Leupold has a no questions-asked lifetime warranty. The one below is an earlier VX-3, mounted on a 700 7mm Magnum.

I will never shoot past 400 yards and would like to stay under 500-600 dollars

I'll say nothing bad about the other recommendations here but I'm partial to Luepold and to their fit, finish, features, warranty and longevity on the market.

The 3-9 firedot and it's motion sensitive sleep function, classic 3-9x range and bright 30mm tube, bullet-drop compensator is smack dab in the center of your price range at $555

    I have three Leupold VX-R 4-12x50mm ... all on 308s.

The larger the objective, the better performance at dawn/dusk lighting conditions.

I also suggest you decide on tube diameter (1" or 30mm) and stick with it.
Makes ring selection and interchangeability between platforms much easier.
