Benelli M3 let's you get both options. Pump or auto depending on what you want. Significantly less expensive than the M4 too.

I have a 930SPX that I got when they first came out. It is a great shotgun and I can't remember ever having any kind of issue feeding or cycling, regardless of what ammo I put through it. It is also very soft shooting. My wife can shoot it all day. She complains loudly when running a pump.

One advantage to the SA shotguns is that it is somewhat easier to put a round in the chamber than it is with a pump in cruiser ready condition. Also there are no issues with short-stroking.

The only drawback I have with SA shotguns is that I like to use the Hogue 12 inch length of pull stock kits on my defensive shotguns. At least on all the pump models. You cannot easily change the LOP on the 930, or most others I'm aware of. You have to be somewhat careful about parts count on any foreign made ones.

Other than that they work great.

I'm looking for an autoloader shotgun for home defense. I have a mossberg 500 defender with a light, ammo saddle and magpul furniture already. I'm mainly looking at these 3 shotguns
    Mossberg 930spx
    Mossberg 930 defender
    Beretta 1301

I'm open to other suggestions . Anyone have thoughts or have owned these?

I bought a Mossberg 940 JM Pro that holds 9 rounds of 2 3/4 inch shells. The 24 inch barrel is a little long but it is no more difficult to handle in the house then my 870 Tactical that only holds 7 rounds and has an 18 inch barrel that I have to pump the shells. I love the 940.

Having experienced multiple issues with my Mossberg 930, I sold it for a Beretta 1301 and haven’t looked back. Many of the 930 shortcomings are well-documented; like sticking shell catch, won’t cycling when damp, frequent cleaning, jamming when bolt/shell release button is pressed while lifter is down, etc. Some of these can be fixed while the shell-release problem is inherent to the design. I’m not sure if the 940 has addressed any of these issues.

Beretta 1301 has been a media darling for the past couple years and rightly so. As long as you stick to the Gen 2 version. The tactical comes with a 12” LOP stock although I’d recommend adding the Beretta .5” recoil reducing pad.

    Saiga-12 with an MD-20 drum.
do those drums squish the shells like the box mags do? i have had trouble keeping a loaded mag as the hulls deform over time get squished into an oblong shape and will not reliably feed, which rules out the weapon from HD use as i cant keep the mags loaded.

I've not had an issue with squished shells in my MD-20. I haven't noticed the box mags causing the shells to deform though. I'll keep an eye out.

    I currently have 4 semi-auto defensive shotguns (all with approximately 18.5" barrel's).
    1 Beretta 1301 Tac Gen 1
    1 Mossy 930
    1 Stoeger 3000
    1 RIA

All are reliable and function well. The Mossy 930 took approx. 400 "break-in rounds before it would function reliably with lower power ammo (I still feed it with ammo that is at least 1350 FPS for peace of mind.
The Beretta is the nicest/softest shooter and has functioned 100% with ANY ammo from day one. The RIA is the 2nd softest shooter and 100% reliable. The Beretta, Mossy, and RIA are all gas systems so that makes a difference in the felt recoil. The Stoeger is "inertia" system and has more felt recoil and also need a little "break-in" before I could use "low-recoil" ammo reliably. I trust all of them in a SD capacity and they are MUCH faster actions/shooters than my pumps.

While I was initially thinking about getting a Beretta 1301, I came across a good deal on benelli M2. Haven't shot it yet, but the stock is a little long for me. That will be the 1st thing I try to change.

I bought a Black Aces Tactical Pro M series, as a test gun. I liked the fact that it accepted Saiga 20 rd drum and 10 rd mags. Plus I like black walnut, but you can get it in synthetic and a pistol grip.
i do regret not getting the bull pup model
