I changed the fixed stock on Bushy to a collapsable. My question is, how much lube does the buffer need to be functional? I use a very light coat of clp on the bolt and trigger group and wonder if I need to grease the buffer.

I just put a light coat of oil on the spring and buffer. You can use grease on the buffer spring the sproing when firing the rifle bugs you.

I run the buffer dry, the only oil that is on it is what gets transfered from the BCG

I have always run mine dry, even on my M16's throughout my active duty time.

Same info as Fuelfather. We run them dry at work and I run mine dry at home. Never even thought about lubing them up. Guess that's the way I learned it in Basic.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I am not a big AR guy but I love shooting them. I am more handgun and shot gun. I am slowly converting my son-in-law to learn that a shotty can be very effective out to a 100 yds. He is trying to convincing me about the AR being the perfect platform. My daughter married him, so I have to be a little easy on the young man ( for now).

There is absolutely no need to lube the buffer tube inside or out. Oil will only attract dust and grit.

No need to lube the buffer, when the noise changes you know to change clips

I dry lube my buffer. Got rid of the sproing noise, and doesn't attract anything.

No lube! Every few years, lightly wipe down the spring with a light coat of oil.
