Interesting, I've got a 3x on mine. May be a bit fuzzy but not a major hindrance. Keeping it allows the addition of a flip up rear sight for redundanc if the more fragile optics fail. Initially I had the same concern as you but once I got optics sighted in, it was not a big problem. Yours may be different.

The base of front sight is part of the gas system. There's a lot of info on line about this. I think it's called the front gas block. It can be changed from what I'm told but I've not attempted to mess with mine yet..

Correct. I don’t want to have to cut it off.

    OK, just to clarify...

So not doing something like this?

I wouldn't recommend grinding anything of the original parts. A low profile gas block can be had for not much money and you'll still have the original in case you ever need it reinstalled.

I disagree and here is why, shaved FSB will get a great seal and all but guaranteed reliability. I’ve used low profile gas blocks because they’re just less labor intensive.

The front post should all but disappear in actual use. I know mine did when I had a Steiner 1-4 on it...and it was mounted as low as it could be.

    Don’t bubba your gun op.

    Balderdash!
Do it. Do it. Do it.

AR15s are like Barbie dolls for big boys.

Do whatever he heck you want to mess with it.
There are NO rules other than "keep it reliable".

    Dremmel to your hearts content.
If you have regrets you can easily replace the modified parts with same or better.

Assembling, tearing down, breaking, fixing, tweaking an AR15???
We are talking essential American man-skills here.

Take that front sight/gas block/gas tube off and reassemble just so you know you can.
Lowers we can all do. Uppers are a little more art and finesse than lowers.

Learning about the slip ring parts and torquing the barrel nut is your final exam!!
