I put together a "dpms pattern" parts kit but I'm having trouble with the bolt hold open. If I hold the bolt catch I can lock it back but as soon as I let off it snaps shut. Is there a difference between the catch for an ar15 and an ar10? Does dpms pattern mean it's not standard and requires a special hold open?

You may have to get a dpms bolt catch. I believe it’s it’s own pattern. AR10’s aren’t as interchangeable in parts as the ar-15.

I was having the same issue and heard of others going through the same thing.

The problem was with the length of the buffer tube parts. The bolt couldn't go back far enough to get behind the hold open.

The latch is hooking the front of the carrier and not the front of the bolt. The carrier doesn't have enough flat surface area to latch properly.

I had to get a shorter buffer to make mine work properly. A longer buffer tube would do the same thing.

Use the hold open on this rifle and a regular AR15 and you will see what I am talking about. Look where the catch is grabbing.

Thanks. It does use a carbine length tube but the buffer is pretty short I think. I'll look at it again tonight.

I just bought a DPMS AR10 lower, it's at the FFL waiting on me right now.

I wanna say a Carbine length AR10 uses an even shorter buffer. I'll let you know when I get it home. I'll do a side by side.

Looks to me if you have a standard ar carbine buffer you have exactly what dawico described.

There is a difference in carbine/rifle buffer and spring. The AR10 holdback lug is wider. Trigger group is the same. Go to brownells or somebody that has pictures of them.

    Finally revisiting this project

Top is the buffer and spring out of an AR-15. The bottom is the buffer and spring out of the AR-10. The AR-10 spring is a touch longer so I tried it with the shorter spring and the shorter buffer combo but still can't get the bolt to lock back.

    Anymore ideas?

I will get some measurements when I get home on my AR10 that works properly.

    Factory DPMS gun btw.

My former DPMS didn't lock back until I shaved the buffer a bit.

Get an AR10 catch - they are different! Carrier is smaller on 15 so smaller catch.

Here's AR-15 (top) & DPMS AR-10 (bottom) as well as JP silent capture spring for AR-10 (carbine length but has delrin spacer)

So I decided to give this project.one more chance. I found the bolt didn't actually retract enough to go past the bolt catch. Hence the bolt catch not working.

I ordered an aero M5 buffer and spring kit last week. When it got here I found the spring was actually longer than the existing spring but had less coils. I swapped the parts and the bolt is retracting further and the bolt catch is working correctly now.
