Recently got an ender 3d and have been on a tear printing goofy stuff for the kids and upgrades for the printer. Recently printed a test glock frame that went well. Gonna start cranking out frames soon I reckon.

I have 2 of the same printer (had 3 but gave one to my nephew). They are workhorses. During the beginning of the beer flu, when nobody could buy face shields and hospitals and doctors weren't able to get them either, I had 3 printers going 24/7 for over 3 months printing ear savers for nurses, and the frames for face shields. Made over 2800 face shields and over 4000 ear savers, and donated them to local hospitals.

I don't use it as much as I used to, but I love my Ender 3. I've done a lot of crap to it though, probably my favorite upgrade was getting rid of the stock board and going with an ARM-based controller with better stepper drivers (BigTreeTech SKR-mini-E3). You can't even hear the steppers any more.

I have a BTT Turbo 1.4 board on the AM8. A BTT 1.3 board and the Ender 3 Pro came with the Creality 32 bit board.

How much money do you think you have in upgrades, besides consumables?

I have an Ender 3v2 that Ive been tinkering with. About to add OctoPrint so I can connect directly from my computer vs using the micro SD card. I’ve also taken up learning Fusion360 so I can design my own stuff.

Wife laughs at me. Work all day on CAD and my down time is spent learning a new system. Oh well I’m a geek.

    Out here by the lake!
On another forum there is a guy who made impossible to find parts for his Stoner 63. Mostly low stress parts IIRC.

I still look down on Metal Injected Molded gun parts even with them being used more often. I guess we will see once the finished frame has a few thousand rounds on it.

Really liked Fusion 360, until the 1 year free trial was gone, then didn’t like the yearly fee to keep using it, it was a little steep for just a hobby.

Hell - they're printing bridges and buildings. ZEISS has a tech center at Oak Ridge National Labs near Knoxville. All the big names in additive are there for the purpose of research and development of additive manufacturing techniques and material analysis. The titanium printing technology is crazy. Additive manufacturing is changing the world. I'll bet we'll see parts machining become obsolete in my lifetime...and I'm old...
