As mentioned, we have a 2016 CX-5 with no issues but the wife wants a new vehicle with several upgrades though the same size. She really wants red and mentioned the RAV4. Reviews show it has slightly more room but slightly less fun to drive. The bigger issue, nobody has red and ALL DFW lots seem to have 1, 2 or 3 in stock of either the low-end or most expensive version. She drives the Grand Touring model and those can be found in her color. Normally we'd hang onto her vehicle but used values are stupid right now. Her Mazda has gone up in value by $8k in the past year.

In 2022, Mazda is redesigning "some" of the exterior and interior (minor make-over) and dropping a six banger under the hood. One of the improvements stated is sound proofing. I don't consider hers loud and yes, I can hear the 4-banger when I step into it. Granted I drive a rag-top Wrangler so anything is quiet but she's never complained.

My Daughter bought a new 2019 Tiguan and put just over 40k miles on it until trading this past week for something bigger. Absolutely no issues and only had to buy tires for it. Her husband drives some type of VW car from 2016. I know it has over 100k miles due to being an Uber driver in the past. No manufacturer issues with his car though he's been in two wrecks and seems to have a lingering alignment issue from his first wreck.

I drove a turbo CX-5 as a rental in Florida a while back. Honestly, it was fun; but I also realized it was unnecessary and only adds complexity.

As I mentioned, the non-turbo like my wife's is more than adequate for a compact SUV. I'm not expecting this to be a sports car, it's more of a touring one and it fits that bill to a 'tee!'

If I need to "autobahn" somewhere quickly, or need performance, I'll take my TDI Sportwagen! Fahrvergnügen, baby!

As mentioned, the RAV4 felt very cheap compared to the Mazda. It may be slightly bigger, but it's nowhere near as luxurious or good looking. I used to be a fan of Toyotas and Hondas, but the latest offerings from both are underwhelming in many regards. The only serious contender to the CX-5 for us would be the Tiguan. My sister in Florida has one and loves it!

p.s. I also have a Wrangler (2005 LJ) so noise is never an issue in other vehicles with me either. ;)

There are mamy way better options.
Not related but related I had a CX7. It hauled ass but blew a turbo then the engine and turbo at less than 100.000 miles. Pure junk as a rebuild afterwords. Check the resale of Mazdas as well.

I test drove a Honda CRV and it was very nice! I am the original owner of a 2007 Honda Civic with 314,000 miles. Original engine, original transmission, neither have been rebuilt. I have replaced the alternator and starter once, nothing else outside of regular maintenance items. Car still drives like a champ and leaks no oil. I would check out what Honda and Toyota has to offer before making a decision.

Lots of great responses here, thank you. This is for my youngest. We looked at the CX-30 first, but I liked the bigger size and mass of the CX-5 for safety.

Please let me know if you've had less than stellar experience with them.
Thigh support is a bit lacking on my 2019. No complaints otherwise.

We bought our daughter a low mileage CX-5 when she graduated college. It's probably got 150k+ on it now and it has been very reliable. So much so, I bought one of our boys a Mazda 3 when he graduated - which has also been very reliable. Neither of them has needed anything other than wear items replaced. Given their experiences, I bought an MX-5 for myself earlier this year.

I bought a new CX-5 in 2016 and have had zero problems. Mine is the fully loaded Grand Touring model and is nicely equipped and featured. The only negative I have is that the audio/navigation/display controls are not intuitive and the round toggle knob on the console is a pain. Once you learn it, not much of a problem but they could have stuck with a more traditional set of controls.

I had a Hyundai Tucson before this and the Mazda is a much better value. At the $30K price point, it’s hard to beat

Interesting comment, as many reviewers also complained about the toggle knob; but it is essentially the same system as found on new Audis.

Many also stated it should have a touch screen, like I have in my Sportwagen; and to be honest, I find the Mazda system a lot easier to use especially when driving!

Touch screen would seem more of a reason not to buy. I don’t see why someone would intentionally want one

Because navigating navigation menus is something that doesn’t work well or intuitively with the little knobs and buttons used for radio and climate control.

And if you already have the touch screen for navigation it makes sense to incorporate the other stuff as well.

As far as distracting a driver, same could be said for the installation of stereos. Get rid of them. Too many people scanning for a song instead of driving. Or just assume that some will be responsible and some won’t. Whether the touch screen is in their hand or on the dash is irrelevant.

I hear you on the controls, but I consider it to be a very, very minor thing.

The 2019 (and I assume later models) has Apple Car Play. So you can navigate w/ voice commands. No need to fool around with control/phone except for the big ass knob in the console area which is easy to find with your eyes on the road.

It also has Android Auto, which also supports voice commands. I use it in my wife's CX-5 all the time (as well as my 2013 VW Sportwagen)!
