I have a Marlin 917VSF. Bought it years ago.

It is a ball to shoot. I put a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x scope on it (when it was a mid line scope from them) and a reduced weight trigger spring. I plan to bed the stock, but have never gotten around to doing that.

It took a while to find the ammunition it likes best (though the worst I found was still MOA at 100)

Used it to clean up a raccoon problem I was having at the lease, and also at the Farm many times. Killed a coyote and a couple of small pigs with it too.

I’ve never stretched it past 200, and can ring my 4” gong with it pretty easily on a low wind day.

I’d like to get it threaded one day, so I can screw on a can.

I had given thought to getting one of the 17 WSM rifles, but other than just an increase in velocity, I don't think that it offers any real advantage over what I already have.

If I ever plan on upgrading with a 17 caliber, it will be a centerfire cartridge.

Not aware of any being offered in semi-auto that I know of.

    Oh yes.

    https://volquartsen.com/departments/17_hmr_rifles
    Pretty high price of admission!!!

I have 2 Volquartsens semi autos
    a 22lr and a .204(yes they once did)

A buddy has a Volquartsen 17hmr with an (overkill) 5x25 Nightforce mounted and it's pure joy to shoot. Accurate to the point of boredom and monotany.

I bought my Savage 93R17 BTVS ten to fifteen"ish" years ago from Dick's (way before they went full retard) because it was looking at me with puppy dog eyes from the clearance rack. It's been a great rifle. 17HMR is fun but it's definitely a niche caliber for guys that already have 22's up the ying yang. I took a few utah p-dogs with it in 2013. I didn't see much (if any) external damage but the p-dogs didn't put up a fight after being hit. If I remember correctly I was using Hornady's TNT 17gr JHP's.

After finding what it liked to shoot...I used the FAT wrench to tune the barrel.

    Curious how this is done
Many rifles depending on how they are designed use a single screw to mount the stock, such as the 10/22

When this is the case, the amount of toque used on that screw can have a positive or an adverse effect on the POI and group size

Using a FAT (torque) wrench and adjusting the torque and shooting groups for testing will usually produce very good results

I'd bet someone has done a video on the process

Thanks for the clarification. I will have to take the FAT wrench with me and give it a go. I had a Browning BAR with the BOSS muzzle break, same concept I imagine. Never tried tuning it though, 300 win mag, and didn't want to got through the trouble with that one.

I will definitely will try your suggestion.

I've been patting myself on the back for buying a Wheeler FAT Wrench.
Mostly it keeps me from over-torquing scope screws.

I sort of poo-poo'ed the "accurizing" part of the product name.
Your post has inspired me to take the tool to the next level.
You sound like you make it live up to its moniker!

    Thanks.
    Will report back.

Friend Bonnie and I both used Marlin 917V rifles in 17HMR for NRA matches at 200 yards. I shot my only PERFECT 500/500 score at 200 yards and another 499/500 with my Marlin. Bonnie's best was 499/500. Those are "High Master" scores!

Our pit guys marked the .17 hits with painted golf T's and we regularly blew the golf T markers to pieces with the next shot!

I saw a Ruger PR in 17HMR at Academy the other day. It was about the only rifle left. I should have bought it.

    Yes indeed.

I have that Ruger with a Firedot Luepold 3x18 44mm on it.
Having an optic on a rifle that costs 4x the rifle price makes perfect sense in a 17HMR.

The thing will shoot 1MOA all day with 17gr Hornady V-Max ammo.

Head shots on the little 15 lb piglets from my blind 60 yards from my feeder are so easy.
    Two last week were delicious.

Where in the head are you shooting them? I shot a large sow with a 204 ruger right between the eyes...just creased her and she ran off.

Sometimes it's the luck of the placement. 1/2 inch to or fro.

I saw my brother drop a 300 lb boar in it's tracks with a .22RF magnum and would not have believe it. Hit freaking lucky cervical C-1 spine foramen magnum (google it) and it hardly kicked.

Your .204 at 4,000+ FPS should have devastating hydrostatic shock.
    Go figure.

I'm shooting the little piglets. Not much to putting them down.
