I recommend that you find a small-time FFL operating out of his home, more like a hobby. Far better transfer cost and no BS.
I think there is a thread around here somewhere of recommended FFLs, some of which are TGT folks.
I was doing that but he's gone silent. I suspect his ffl got revoked and all his paperwork is in an atf database.

One thing I have always wondered is if the model firearm sold from Academy or say Cabellas the same as you would get from a reputable gun shop. I always find it strange that I am looking for a particular model and Carter's does not have it at any location, but Academy does. You know...like getting an appliance from Costco as opposed to a department store, sometimes the models are made SPECIFICALLY for Costco and are different than the same model from the department store. Any thoughts on this?

I am thinking very hard about getting a p229 legion, none of my regular gun shops have it, but they have it at Field and Stream in Katy and at the Academy in Katy.

Academy might have some exclusives, but generally that's not the case. The reason why you'd see a particular gun in Academy and not in the LGS is because Academy will always beat the LGS on economy of scale. Best for the LGS to only buy guns that Academy doesn't stock.

    Gunz are icky.
Cabela’s used to have exclusive model firearms.
Bond Arms made one for them called a “rustic ranger”.
It was sold as a kit. Holster included. No one else had the exact model.
It only differed by the grips and the holster from the standard models.
Now that Bass Pro runs it the gun dept svcks.

As a wholesaler, Talo does that. Academy may do enough volume for exclusives, but probably not in a premium like a Legion.

You can always cross check the SKUs if you like.

That makes sense actually, appreciate the input as it has always been a question for me.

Ya agreed Todd, I guess I should check on the SKUs - even the Costco exclusive items have different SKU's than retail stores.

Cabelas definitely has their own models. I have a Savage fv12 that is a Cabelas only model. I don't believe academy gets anything special.

Bass pro is not pro gun. They wouldn't carry ARs till Remington made one camo. They also never had carry or self defense specific handguns for years cause their lo leadership were fudd who think the 2nd is about shooting deer. They had said so many times.

    Phuck them.

Buying a gun at BassPro is an ordeal. First fill out the 4473 electronically, then sales guy looks at it. Then wait for the gun sales counter manager 15 minutes so he then looks at it. Then another wait for the floor manager to look at the thing. Then pay and be escorted to the front door. over 30 minutes waiting for managers to look at the form. Never again.

BassPro does too. They had a special Black Friday deal on a Savage 17 HMR that was all camo. Supposed BP exclusive.

My daughter shoots it great. 5 shots you could cover with a dime.

That FV 12 shoots pretty good too. 4 shot group. It loves 168gr Federal Sierra match.

Seems like it’s that way at any big store. They have checks in place. Probably a good thing overall. But it’s a pain to wait.

The big box stores rarely offered a screaming deal, except perhaps on Black Friday. I can almost always find a better deal with one of the large online firearms stores. I believe Walmart said they caved to the protesters in part because they were struggling to compete on MSRs, pistols, and ammo any way. The problem is now you are removing convenient buying options from rural and urban centers, creating an out of mind out of sight situation, and reducing new entrants to the culture because they don't realize how its easier and cheaper to buy online through an FFL.

I am thinking very hard about getting a p229 legion, none of my regular gun shops have it, but they have it at Field and Stream in Katy and at the Academy in Katy.

IDK re weapons, b/c I only buy them from MY gun shops or known individuals, like LEO’s, via my ATF Son.

But I’ve been caught by poor service and “special el-cheapo” models of common items from both WalMart & Academy, never Cabelas or LLBean, etc.

Once, I was at a friend’s ranch in the chaparral b/t Falfurrias & Benavides on a Winter’s hunt, needing rain gear. Went to Academy & found a parka, same make & model as one at Cabelas, but I was far from Cabelas. I bought it, only to find a cheaper zipper and ZERO pockets. I got home, check Cabela’s, theirs of same make & mod # had a brass full length zipper and several pockets for the same price. I dealt w/ Cabelas for decades, never a problem. Once, I ordered a couple really expensive rods to use offshore Port Isabel/SPI. Took them Out of boxes, put them on mat in Tahoe. When I tried to pick them up, they both just fell into pieces. Never used at all, no reels ever. I called and told them: ”This is nuts”, Lady said “Sorry that happened, will re-credit you immediately”. I asked: “Do y’all want photos?” She replied, “No sir, I see you are a very good long-term customer, these things happen.” Then: “Do you need an express shipment of some replacement?” No, but thanks. That is service !
Just take a malfunctioning gun or other item to Mr. Academy or Mr. WalMart on the afternoon before season opener. R&M Guns WILL do something to help their repeat customers. Many gun shops will. Big Box places will say “Duh, mail it to manufacturer.”
BTW it is same with your local Pharmacy, please support your LOCAL Pharmacy, they will try to help you. Many times I’ve authorized a short-term refill for a patient I didn’t really know when their MD was unavailable, by a brief phone interview arranged by their LOCAL Druggist. NO Big Box would do that !

At one time I heard that some of the big distributors and the stores they feed kind of worked like car manufacturers and big dealerships. Subaru in Colorado Springs moved more Foresters than any other dealership in the US, so they would get the special edition models and the few and far between variants more easily than a smaller dealership elsewhere. Academy is not huge, but they might luck out from time to time with their allocation of a Legion--receiving just 1 of the 100 they asked for. It then sits on the shelf since not many know its there because they are so busy waiting for in stock notifications from the big online dealers.

I have an ak-p on order from Palmetto and I awoke to an email saying I have to choose a new ffl because Academy doesn't accept ar/ak or braced pistols. I was also informed Saturday when I was in there that the transfer fee was raised to $60.

    Buh bye Academy.
    It's been a good run.
I never use commercial based FFL's to do transfers. While its so easy to find local FFL's that will work around your a schedule...its also nice to work with "mom and pop" businesses in general. gunbroker has a phenomenal FFL finder and it works well for me.

I only shop at Academy when they offer a 10% discount for 30 days veterans for special holidays like 4th of July. I use my Academy card for an additional 5% which totals to 15% off ammo and guns. I stock up on ammo mainly. If 9mm price is $19.95 I get it for $16.95.

And my FFL guy charges me $15 for a transfer

I was doing that for the last few years but I think the aft pulled his license. He seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. Another FFL didn't open until 11 and missed 2 if my deliveries. Using a local over priced gun shop for now

Oh yea. I can totally understand that. I actually had a local FFL dissolve into thin air too. Find out some time down the line, a very close family member of his had become very ill, and unfortunately passed away.

    Totally understand though.

I feel though that most hunters/shooters prefer to use mom and pops over mass commercial places. Maybe its a wanting to stay grounded and uncompelled to want to commercialize such a intimate hobby?
