I am thinking of getting this upper to finish the latest (and only) build. Seems like a real thumper. But I find very little on actual usage besides the usual writer typr reviews. Anyone out there have experience with this round? Looks to me it is good for 100 to 200 yards and probably leaves a big hole. Seems that ammo is available and not overly expensive. It has my interest.

I have one. Mine has a big two port brake, and It is a literal blast to shoot. I have never taken an animal with it.
Ballistically it is the same as a 50 cal muzzleloader with a 45 gr sabot using 150gr of triple7. Definitely not over 200 yard, inside 175 would be a safer bet. While ammo is available, I would in no way say it is affordable anymore.
ETA- 45 cal sabot, not 45gr

.458 SOCOM feeds fine from magpul mags. It is a thumper. 1st hog I hit at 80 yards proved to me it’s a destroyer. .450 has very similar ballistics.

Load your own with thumpers. They’re very pricey to feed otherwise.

The 458 SOCOM has virtually identical ballistics as a 45-70 ( modern). Same bullet, same powders ( not black). It reminds me of my BSA500, a thumper. .

Well the upper arrived today. I was going to mount scope but alas the rings need to be higher.

I want hear what you think about this setup once you get a chance to shoot. I almost purchased one a couple months ago for hog hunting.

The PEPR mounts are made for ARs.

Give us a report after you shoot it.

Well I got the Pepr sight mount. Gun shoots just fine. Took me a few rounds to dial it in. Fun to shoot for the first 15 then not so fun just wearing a tshirt Now thinking about a drop in trigger. I have a rRise RA 240. The package lists .308 so I think it should be good. Sent a note to mfg just to be safe

I enjoy my 450. I reload so I can get the ammo costs way down. I have t shot any animals with it as I pretty much just shoot paper. I was invited on a hog hunt and if I go I will likely take the 450.

I have 2 duramags but I'm having g trouble with them. I think I've narrowed down the problem to the buffer. I installed a heavier H2 buffer in my rifle and it just doesn't cycle enough to pickup the next round. I'm going to order an H1 buffer and see if it'll work.

That's said I originally ran it with a standard buffer and didn't have any trouble feeding from standard aluminum 30rd GI mags.

Well Ives PSA lower and a bear creek upper. I’m using 5 round mags but forget the mfg. I also have some duramags on back order. My original thoughts were to use this on hogs. Just need to find a place
