I have a bunch of Red Dot powder and have used it for shotgun shells and I also use it in .45 Colt rounds. I know its a good powder for pistol cartridges but can't find a recipe for .40 S&W and 165gr JHP. Does anyone know a good, safe handload for this?

Powders act funny sometimes. .40 S&W is also one of the touchy rounds to load as it is already +p. That is why they is no .40 +p ammo, it is already at the top of it's pressure curve.

That being said, there is probably a reason you can't find a load for that combo. There may not be a safe load for those two together.

Unless you hate your gun and fingers just walk away if you can't find any loads for it.

Would you really trust a load that you received off the internet anyways?

    Be safe.

    Check the Brian Enos Forums.
Lots of safe load data posted over there.

    Good luck.

As expected Alliant's website doesn't list any loads for that combo (or any .40 S&W bullets) with Red Dot. I figured the OP looked there.

I would avoid putting the two together.

Red Dot is a very "well behaved" powder. 4.7gn is probably max for 165gn JHP.
Alliant does not have any loads for Red Dot because they consider it a shotgun powder and decided to stop testing shotgun powders in pistol cartridges.
I would rather shoot Red Dot in .40S&W than TiteGroup or Clays.
AA5 and Silhouette are my powders for .40S&W.

.40 S&W is not +P, in fact it SAAMI max is the same as standard 9mm loads.
